Chapter 1 - The Mortgage Folder

A financial fraud investigator confronts the parents who secretly placed her name on her sister’s defaulted mortgage as an unidentified notary appears on a secure bank screen to reveal who impersonated her.

Rachel Mercer sat at the end of the bank conference table with tears still drying on her face.

The room was cold, glass-walled, and too bright.

Every surface reflected something she did not want to see.

Her father’s rage.

Her mother’s entitlement.

Her sister’s smug smile.

The thick stack of mortgage papers sitting in Robert Mercer’s hand.

Rachel wore her navy blazer like armor, but beneath it, her pulse was breaking itself against her ribs.

She had reviewed fraud files in rooms exactly like this.

She had watched strangers cry over forged deeds, stolen identities, and families who called theft a misunderstanding.

She had never expected to sit at the end of the table as the victim.

Robert stormed around her chair and slammed the mortgage folder directly in front of her.

Water glasses jumped.

Linda stood behind him in her white suit, pearl earrings glowing under the cold daylight.

Ava crossed her arms, designer jacket crisp, chin lifted as if the room already belonged to her.

Robert leaned over Rachel, one finger stabbing inches from her face.

“You will pay Ava’s mortgage because family protects family!”

Rachel looked at the folder.

Then at him.

Her hand moved slowly toward the cover.

Robert’s nostrils flared.

“Open it.”

She did.

Inside were copied identification records.

Fabricated income pages.

Mortgage documents carrying her name.

And signatures shaped like hers but not born from her hand.

Rachel’s fingers trembled so violently the page rattled.

Linda pushed a pen toward her with a satisfied little smile.

“Just fix it, Rachel.”

Rachel stared at the pen.

Then at the signatures.

Then she picked it up.

Robert relaxed.

Ava smiled.

Linda’s shoulders lowered.

For half a second, they believed she had broken.

Rachel snapped the pen in half against the polished table.

The crack echoed through the conference room.

She surged to her feet.

Robert recoiled.

Rachel’s tearful face hardened into cold professional fury.

“You forged my name and called the crime a favor.”

Ava lunged for the folder.

“You earn more than all of us. This default cannot hurt you.”

Rachel tore the folder back and slammed her smartphone onto the table.

One button.

The conference doors opened.

A male compliance officer entered with a sealed evidence file.

Robert’s pointing hand froze.

The large video screen flickered on.

A dark-haired woman appeared holding an identification card.

The compliance officer looked toward Rachel.

“The notary is ready to identify who appeared under your name.”

Rachel slid the sealed file into the center of the table.

“Then let her look carefully at every person in this room.”
