Chapter 9 - The Coffin Question

Dr. Evans sank into a chair near the scanner as if his bones had finally given up holding him.
The NICU lights made his skin look gray.
Nathaniel remained standing between the incubator and the camera, one shoulder angled toward the door, one hand near his phone, the torn navy button still in his fist.
The baby slept again.
Tiny chest rising.
Tiny hand curled.
Alive.
Every few seconds, Nathaniel’s eyes returned to him, as if the child could vanish if not watched.
Evans whispered, “I did not see the coffin sealed.”
Nathaniel stared at him.
“I saw the body release paperwork. I saw the file. I saw your signature.”
“I signed a preliminary clinical note. Not the final release.”
“Your name was on it.”
“Then it was copied.”
Forged again.
His signature on a transfer.
Evans’s name on a release.
Maribel’s body declared.
His son hidden.
The structure became clearer without revealing its builder.
Nathaniel’s voice went cold.
“How many signatures were stolen?”
Evans looked at the floor.
“I don’t know.”
“What happened after Maribel was taken from trauma?”
Evans shut his eyes.
“She was moved.”
“Where?”
“I was told surgical intervention.”
“By who?”
Silence.
Nathaniel stepped forward.
Evans opened his eyes, terrified.
“The transport order came from an executive channel. It bypassed normal routing.”
“Pierce office.”
Evans did not answer.
Nathaniel leaned down.
“Was Grant there?”
The doctor’s face tightened.
Nathaniel saw it.
Again, not enough.
But enough to know Grant’s absence from the truth was not innocence.
Evans whispered, “I saw him in the corridor.”
Nathaniel’s breath stopped.
“When?”
“After they moved her. Before the infant transfer.”
Nathaniel closed his eyes.
Grant in the corridor.
Vivian’s sealed order.
Maribel calling Nathaniel’s name.
A baby hidden alive.
A coffin closed.
A torn navy button.
Nathaniel opened his eyes.
“Did he see my son?”
Evans’s lips trembled.
“Yes.”
The room went still.
Nathaniel looked at the incubator.
His son slept beneath hospital light, unaware that adults had already lied over his first breath.
Nathaniel’s voice became barely audible.
“And Grant let me bury him.”
Evans did not answer.
No answer was needed.
Then the security camera turned again.
May you like
This time, it centered directly on the silver rattle.
