Chapter 10 - Something Went Wrong

No one revealed who legally owned the house.
No one explained what Derek discovered inside.
No one confirmed whether security caught him.
No legal consequence arrived.
The final outcome remained hidden beyond the candlelight.
Only the birthday table remained: white tablecloth, crystal wineglasses, melted candles, untouched cake, Vanessa’s face twisted with panic, Derek’s body shaking, and the brass key ring lying beside Eleanor’s plate like a failed weapon.
Eleanor sat in her champagne beaded gown, blonde-gray hair soft against her shoulders, gold necklace catching the warm light. Her expression was calm, but her eyes were cold and precise.
The retired forensic accountant had heard enough.
Not everything.
Enough.
Vanessa stood beside Derek now, one hand locked around his sleeve, ivory lace dress rigid against her trembling body.
“What happened at her house?” she whispered again.
Derek did not look at her.
He looked at Eleanor.
Rain slid down the tall windows behind them. The city lights blurred outside, dark and gold. Somewhere near the entrance, the restaurant doors settled closed after opening for someone unseen.
Eleanor did not turn.
She watched Derek over the dying candles.
His hand lifted as if to point toward her, then dropped.
The keys slipped fully from the edge of the plate and struck the table again with a sharp metallic rattle.
Vanessa flinched.
Derek leaned toward her, but his terrified eyes never left Eleanor.
“Something went wrong… your mother…”
His voice broke.
He could not finish.
Or would not.
Eleanor calmly lowered her wineglass.
Vanessa’s expression twisted from fury into naked fear.
The phone on the table vibrated again, unanswered.
The candle flames trembled.
Derek’s mouth remained open around the missing words.
Eleanor looked from the keys to her daughter, then to her son-in-law.
She did not accuse.
She did not explain.
She did not reveal what had been waiting.
That was what frightened them most.
Her silence had weight.
May you like
Her stillness had design.
And as the brass keys lay beside the burning birthday candles, Vanessa finally understood that the woman she tried to distract had been quietly listening, measuring, and preparing from the first whisper beneath the table.
