Chapter 13 - the floor beneath the nursery

The service elevator descended.

Not up.

Hospital security logs showed Adam and Rachel using a maintenance badge to reach sublevel two.

Old records storage.

Laundry infrastructure.

Unused offices.

Why go down?

Because Rachel had arranged a meeting there.

Detective Brooks found the encrypted message on a recovered federal device.

SUBLEVEL 2. 07:30. BRING ORIGINAL TRUST WITNESS COPY.

Recipient:

E.MARCH.

Edward March.

The eighty-three-year-old trust witness.

He had already returned safely after Martin’s motel manipulation.

Why summon him?

Edward admitted Rachel contacted him.

“She said Adam needed my original signed copy.”

“Did you bring it?”

“Yes.”

“Where is it?”

Edward looked frightened.

“I gave it to him.”

“What happened?”

“A woman came.”

“Rachel?”

“No.”

“Who?”

“Evelyn Voss.”

Crescent’s owner.

The suspected leak.

Edward said Evelyn entered the records room alone.

Adam immediately told him to leave.

Rachel blocked the doorway.

Argument.

Edward heard only fragments.

Evelyn:

“You’re about to destroy thirty years of settlements.”

Adam:

“They were fraud.”

Evelyn:

“Some of those families would collapse if reopened.”

Adam:

“That is not my problem.”

Then Rachel:

“It becomes federal evidence the minute you hand me the server map.”

Evelyn had come to negotiate.

Not simply attack.

She possessed a map showing every guardianship case influenced through Crescent systems.

Thousands of records touched.

Not necessarily thousands of crimes.

But enough to expose which cases needed review.

She wanted immunity.

Why follow Adam through the hospital?

Because she did not trust the federal office after discovering someone else was using Crescent access.

Wait.

Someone else?

Evelyn claimed she was not the person who accessed Claire’s hospital records that morning.

Her credentials had been cloned.

By whom?

Lowell Pierce.

Maybe.

Martin?

Maybe.

Then gunfire? Avoid violent action. We can use alarm and chase. Let's stay non-graphic.

At 7:36, hospital cameras on sublevel two went dark.

A fire alarm triggered.

No fire.

When security arrived:

Edward had escaped through a stairwell.

Rachel was gone.

Adam gone.

Evelyn gone.

On the floor:

Original trust copy.

Dropped.

And a broken Crescent security token.

No visible injuries.

No explanation.

Hospital network logs showed someone tried to access neonatal discharge records during the alarm.

Noah and Grace.

Request:

Create duplicate transfer wristbands.

Destination:

RIVERBEND PEDIATRIC RECOVERY.

Claire went cold.

Someone was trying to create legitimate-looking paperwork to remove the babies from St. Matthew during chaos.

The plot had not ended with Andrew’s arrest.

The professional system was still operating.

Riverbend Pediatric Recovery existed.

Private facility.

Lowell Pierce sat on its advisory board.

Federal agents raided it.

No infants.

But two empty bassinets had been prepared.

Names:

NOAH C.

GRACE C.

Arrival date:

Today.

The plan had moved from home guardianship to hospital transfer.

Who authorized it?

Electronic physician signature:

Dr. Hannah Price.

Hannah stared.

“I did not sign that.”

Her credential had been copied.

Crescent again.

The nurse manager’s approval:

Kelly Monroe.

Also forged.

Someone was using legitimate staff identities to make a fake transfer look routine.

That mirrored the false death record.

The fake notary.

The trust amendment.

The core method was not brute force.

It was paperwork that looked ordinary long enough to move people.

Emma had beaten it by doing something paperwork could not predict.

Walking through a hospital door.

Claire held that thought.

Then Agent Rachel Sutton called Lena from a secure line.

“We’re alive.”

“Adam?”

“With me.”

“Evelyn?”

“Also alive.”

“What happened?”

“Lowell Pierce came to the sublevel.”

“Alone?”

“No.”

“Who?”

“Martin.”

Father and daughter had both been there.

Martin tried to stop Evelyn from surrendering the server map.

Why?

Because the map would expose his entire career.

Lowell wanted the trust copy.

Adam and Rachel escaped with Evelyn through an old utility corridor.

“Where are you?”

Rachel refused.

Lena almost shouted.

“Claire’s children were just targeted again.”

Silence.

Then Adam’s voice came on the line.

“Lena.”

“You have ten seconds before I start treating you like a fugitive.”

“I know who is still inside St. Matthew.”

“Who?”

“Not Pierce.”

Lena stopped.

“Then who?”

Adam said:

“The person who installed Crescent access here years ago.”

Name:

Dr. Hannah Price.

Lena looked through the glass at the ER doctor standing beside Claire.

“No.”

Adam continued:

“Hannah’s father founded Riverbend.”

Claire stared at Hannah.

Hannah looked confused.

Then frightened.

“What is he saying?”

Adam:

“Ask her about Evelyn Voss.”

Lena put the call on speaker.

Hannah went pale.

“I know Evelyn.”

“How?”

“We trained together.”

“When?”

“Fifteen years ago.”

“Did you help install Crescent systems?”

“No.”

Then Hannah stopped.

“My husband did.”

Her late husband, Michael Price, had been a hospital IT director.

He died two years earlier.

His archived administrator account still existed.

Someone had used it that morning.

Another dead person’s credential.

Hannah covered her mouth.

“I didn’t know.”

Adam’s voice:

“Michael worked for Martin Voss before St. Matthew.”

The network reached into the hospital through history.

But Hannah might be another person whose trusted connection had been exploited.

Lena asked:

“Where is Michael Price’s old security token?”

Hannah thought.

“At home.”

Police went.

The token was gone.

Her house had been entered without obvious damage.

One camera captured the visitor.

Lowell Pierce.

Two nights earlier.

He had stolen the credential before Claire ever arrived at the hospital.

So Hannah was not the insider.

She was another identity being used.

Then Rachel said:

“We have Evelyn’s server map.”

“Send it.”

“I can’t electronically. Too easy to intercept.”

“Then bring it.”

“We will.”

“When?”

“After Adam does one thing.”

Claire took the phone.

“No.”

Everyone stopped.

“Claire—”

“No, Adam.”

Silence.

“You have already done six months of things without telling me.”

“I was trying—”

“Do not say protecting me.”

Adam went quiet.

Claire’s voice shook.

“You come here. You tell me the truth. Then you decide what you’re doing next with your wife actually in the room.”

Long silence.

Then Adam said:

“You’re right.”

It did not repair anything.

But it was the first correct answer.

He agreed to come.

Twenty minutes later, hospital security spotted a man entering through a side corridor.

Adam.

Claire saw him on the monitor.

Alive.

Older.

Thinner.

Walking toward her.

Then every alarm on the neonatal floor activated at once.

Not medical alarms.

Security.

A fire door closed between Adam and the ward.

Another transfer request appeared on the system.

NOAH CARTER — CLEARED.

GRACE CARTER — CLEARED.

Transport team assigned.

And in the hallway beyond the nursery, two people in legitimate-looking hospital transport uniforms appeared with an empty twin bassinet.

👉 Adam finally returned to the hospital alive—but the same forged-record system that erased his death was now being used in real time to remove Noah and Grace from the nursery.
