Chapter 12 - THE SHOT THAT NEVER CAME
Ray pulled Lily and Nora below the window.
Mara’s officers surrounded the property within minutes.
No shot struck the house.
The red dot came from a laser pointer mounted on a camera, not a firearm.
Dana wanted them to panic and expose where Teddy was kept.
A drone hovered above a tree line behind the property. It carried a small camera and directional microphone.
Officers followed its signal to an abandoned van.
Dana was gone.
Inside the van were headphones, batteries, forged identification cards, and a printed plan of Nora’s house.
The drone footage showed Ray moving Lily away from the window.
It also captured the teddy bear.
Dana had been searching for it since Caleb’s arrest.
Caleb knew Hannah recorded warnings.
Dana did not know how many files existed.
If the bear contained her own sessions with Lily or messages about Hannah’s crash, it could destroy her defense.
Mara moved Teddy into secure evidence storage after copying every file. Lily agreed only after receiving an exact replacement with no electronics inside.
“I want the old one back after court,” she said.
“You will,” Grace promised.
The original recorder held one damaged file that technicians had not yet restored.
Dana’s urgency suggested it mattered.
Audio engineers reconstructed the first portion.
Hannah’s voice:
“Dana came again. She says Caleb only wants help, but she keeps asking Lily to repeat things she never said.”
A door closed in the background.
Hannah continued:
“I found messages about the car. I copied them. The copy is not here.”
The recording cut into static.
The location of the copied messages remained unknown.
Caleb and Dana both believed Teddy contained them.
It did not.
Hannah hid the originals somewhere else.
Grace reviewed every item from Hannah’s estate.
A box of Lily’s childhood books had never been opened because Caleb claimed it contained mold. The box remained inside a storage facility under court seal.
Investigators found the books dry and undamaged.
Inside a picture book called The Moon Road was an envelope of printed messages.
Caleb: She is leaving in the morning.
Dana: Then make sure the meeting never happens.
Caleb: I will handle the car.
Dana: Do not make it obvious. The child must still look like she needs you.
The final line changed Dana’s position.
She did not merely encourage delaying Hannah.
She knew Lily’s continued dependence was part of the plan.
Whether she expected Hannah’s death or incapacitation, she understood that Caleb intended to create danger.
The envelope also contained a photograph of Caleb beneath Hannah’s car with the brake line exposed.
Hannah took it through the garage window.
She had seen him tampering with the vehicle.
Why did she drive it the next morning?
Her notebook answered.
Caleb told her he had replaced the damaged line after she caught him checking it. Hannah tested the pedal in the driveway and believed the car was safe.
The cut had been made where pressure and movement would worsen it gradually.
The brakes failed miles later.
The prosecutor prepared a new homicide case.
Caleb now faced charges connected to both Hannah and Lily.
Dana would face conspiracy charges if captured.
The case remained grounded in one continuing scheme.
Caleb wanted control.
Dana provided the language and paperwork.
Hannah stood in the way.
Then Lily did.
At Nora’s house, Lily slept without Teddy for the first time.
Ray remained outside the gate.
Near dawn, Mara called.
Dana had used one of her false identities to purchase a bus ticket west.
The bus had already left Indianapolis.
Officers stopped it near the Illinois border.
Dana’s seat was empty.
On it lay a red folder containing copies of Lily’s new guardianship documents.
A handwritten note covered the first page:
May you like
You protected the account. You did not protect the child.
