Chapter 1

Billionaire Father Returns Home on Christmas Eve and Finds His Four Barefoot Five-Year-Old Daughters Starving on Moldy Bread While His New Wife Celebrates in Diamonds Downstairs.

The first thing I saw was the bread.

Gray at the edges.

Hard enough that Ava needed both hands to pull the plate toward her chest.

The second thing I saw was my daughters’ bare feet.

Four pairs beneath the formal dining table, pale against the dark carpet while snow pressed white against the mansion windows.

Ava, Mia, Chloe, and Grace were wearing thin cream nightgowns stained at the hems. Their hair was tangled. Their lips had a faint blue cast from the cold dining room.

Beyond them, the Christmas party glittered beneath crystal chandeliers.

Music.

Champagne.

Laughter.

Bianca stood on the banquet table in a silver dress and diamonds, raising a bottle while wealthy guests applauded.

I dropped to my knees among my daughters.

Ava dragged the plate closer, terrified I would take it.

“Please don’t throw it away, Daddy. We’re still hungry.”

My chest stopped working.

I looked at the moldy bread.

The untouched glasses of ice water.

The four girls trembling around me.

I removed my suit jacket and wrapped it around Ava and Grace, pulling Mia and Chloe closer without moving too quickly.

Bianca finally noticed me.

She lifted the champagne bottle mockingly.

“Ethan, stop rewarding their little performance.”

The music continued for half a second.

Then one guest lowered his glass.

Another reached for the sound controls.

The room fell silent except for the fireplace and my daughters’ breathing.

Mia gripped my sleeve.

“She said food makes girls ugly.”

I touched her cold cheek.

There were faint marks around her wrist.

I rose slowly, keeping one hand on Ava’s shoulder.

“Where are their coats, Bianca?”

Her smile faltered.

She climbed down from the table and gestured toward the dark hallway as though my question bored her.

Beneath the Christmas tree sat dozens of unopened gifts wrapped in gold paper.

My daughters had no socks.

I lifted Chloe into one arm. Grace clung to my trouser leg. Ava and Mia stayed inside my jacket.

Then I called Mason.

“Mason, freeze every card she touched and send the doctor now.”

Bianca stepped toward us.

I raised one hand.

She stopped.

The champagne bottle slipped from her fingers and rolled across the table without breaking.

I looked from the bottle to the bread.

Then back at my wife.

And Bianca finally understood that the man standing between her and the children was no longer the husband she had learned to manipulate.

I was their father.
