Chapter 12 - the doctor who should have been dead

Samuel Keene had always been the calmest man in the Northstar laboratory.

Franklin remembered that much.

Even when alarms sounded, Samuel never raised his voice.

Even when Franklin accused the company of illegal trials, Samuel had simply adjusted his glasses and said:

“You’re reacting emotionally.”

Franklin hated remembering those words.

Detective Cole compared old photographs of Samuel to the recent Bellweather image.

The match was strong.

Facial aging consistent.

Scar identical.

Ear structure identical.

Samuel Keene was likely alive.

Richard Vale Jr. searched his father’s files.

A note from 2009 read:

KEENE DEATH UNVERIFIED. POSSIBLE BELLWEATHER SUCCESSOR.

Arthur leaned back.

“My mother’s family.”

Franklin looked at him.

“Maybe Samuel married into it.”

Arthur searched genealogical records.

Samuel Keene’s mother was listed as Catherine Keene.

Birth surname—

Bellweather.

Arthur stared.

“He was my mother’s cousin.”

The family connection explained access.

Money.

Secrecy.

And possibly why Samuel had been trusted with the original program.

Victoria sat wrapped in a hotel blanket.

Nathan remained across the room, not beside her.

She noticed.

“I know you hate me.”

Nathan answered quietly.

“I don’t know what I feel.”

“I was scared.”

“You humiliated my father.”

“I thought Franklin was part of whatever was threatening me.”

“You pulled his chair.”

Victoria lowered her eyes.

“I know.”

“You stepped on his hand.”

Tears formed.

“I know.”

Nathan did not comfort her.

Some actions could be understood without being excused.

Franklin watched his son and realized something painful.

Whatever conspiracy had brought Nathan and Victoria together, their future would now be their own decision.

No trust could force that.

No family could repair what cruelty had revealed.

Detective Cole interrupted.

“We found something at Bellweather.”

A locked cabinet contained dozens of files.

Each labeled with family names.

Hale.

Mercer.

Vale.

Keene.

Under HALE were photographs of Nathan throughout childhood.

School.

Baseball games.

College graduation.

His first apartment.

Franklin’s face tightened.

“They watched him his entire life.”

Under MERCER were photographs of Victoria.

The same.

Their relationship had not been arranged at one moment.

It had been anticipated for decades.

Arthur whispered:

“They were waiting.”

One file contained a projection written in 1995.

HALE MALE DESCENDANT + MERCER FEMALE DESCENDANT = OPTIMAL REUNIFICATION PATH.

Nathan slammed the folder closed.

“I was a baby.”

Victoria whispered:

“I wasn’t even born.”

Samuel—or whoever ran Bellweather—had treated future children like pieces on a board.

Then Franklin found Evelyn’s file.

Unlike the others, hers contained angry red annotations.

DEFECTOR.

FAILED ADMINISTRATOR.

DEVICE LOCATION UNKNOWN.

At the bottom:

CURRENT LEVERAGE: NATHAN HALE.

Franklin turned to Detective Cole.

“Find Samuel.”

“We’re trying.”

Richard noticed another file.

FRANKLIN — RESTORATION.

Inside was a modern medical assessment based entirely on surveillance.

Nathan read the final line.

SUBJECT F.H. MEMORY RECOVERY INCOMPLETE. DEVICE MAY TRIGGER FULL RECALL.

Franklin stared at it.

“The prototype doesn’t just hold records.”

Arthur understood.

“It may contain something connected to what happened to you.”

Franklin shook his head.

“I don’t want anything connected to that program inside my head again.”

But Richard kept reading.

The file contained a location.

EVELYN CUSTODY SITE — OPTION B.

Not where Evelyn was.

Where Samuel expected to place her after capture.

An abandoned Mercer-owned clinic near Lake Geneva.

Police searched it.

They found no Evelyn.

But in the basement was a steel safe.

Inside, a small object wrapped in Evelyn’s scarf.

Franklin recognized the scarf.

He had bought it for her on their twentieth anniversary.

The object was a compact metal medical device.

The missing Northstar prototype.

For thirty-two years people had lied, disappeared, staged deaths, manipulated families, and possibly killed to obtain it.

And now it was sitting in Detective Cole’s evidence bag.

Nathan looked at his father.

“Mom left it for you.”

Franklin stared at the device.

Then noticed a small handwritten label attached beneath it.

Evelyn’s handwriting.

FRANKLIN — YOU ALREADY OPENED THIS ONCE.

May you like

He had no memory of ever seeing it.

👉 The missing Northstar device has finally surfaced, along with Evelyn’s claim that Franklin accessed it before his memory was altered—meaning his own forgotten past may contain the evidence everyone is hunting.
