PART 1

“He told the hospital she slipped in the shower… until the chief doctor walked in, recognized his own sister, and shattered the lie with one punch.”

The first thing Dr. Liam Bennett noticed was the bruise on her throat.

Not the split lip.

Not the purple swelling along her cheekbone.

Not even the dried blood caught in the strands of her hair.

It was the bruise on her throat.

A thumbprint on one side.

Four faded finger marks on the other.

The kind no shower floor had ever made.

He had been halfway through signing discharge notes at Saint Jude Memorial when the charge nurse called him into Trauma Three.

Female patient.

Late twenties.

Head injury.

Possible concussion.

Husband says she slipped in the shower.

Liam stepped through the emergency room doors already irritated.

By the time he reached the gurney, irritation had burned into something far worse.

The woman under the white hospital sheet was pale, barely conscious, and covered in the kind of injuries that made every instinct in his body turn violent.

Then she shifted.

Just enough for him to see the small crescent scar above her eyebrow.

The scar she had gotten at eight years old when she fell off her bike and cried into his T-shirt.

The scar of his little sister.

“Emma?” he said, and his voice cracked on the second syllable.

The man standing beside the bed turned too fast.

Expensive black suit.

Perfect haircut.

Controlled, practiced concern.

He lifted both hands as if he was the reasonable one in the room.

“Doctor, thank God,” he said.

“She slipped in the shower and hit the sink.”

“She’s been emotional lately.”

“I’ve been trying to tell them—”

Liam hit him before he finished.

The punch landed so hard the man staggered sideways into a rolling cart.

Metal clattered.

A nurse gasped.

Another shouted his name.

Two officers at the end of the corridor spun toward the commotion and broke into a run.

“She didn’t fall,” Liam said, stepping in front of the gurney like a wall.

His gloved hand shook with rage.

“She did not fall.”

The husband clutched his jaw and stared in disbelief.

“What the hell is wrong with you?”

“It was an accident!”

“She slipped!”

“I’m her husband!”

On the gurney, Emma’s eyelids fluttered open.

For one terrible second she looked confused.

Then her gaze found Liam.

Fear broke across her face.

Relief followed so fast it was almost cruel.

Her fingers twitched weakly against the sheet.

“Liam…” she whispered.

He was at her side instantly.

“I’m here,” he said.

“I’m here, Em.”

“You’re safe.”

Tears leaked from the corners of her eyes.

Her lips trembled.

Then she looked past him, straight at the man in the suit.

“He did this.”

The words were barely audible.

The effect was explosive.

One officer seized Ethan Cole’s right arm.

The other twisted his left behind his back.

He started shouting before the handcuffs even clicked.

“She’s confused!”

“She hit her head!”

“She doesn’t know what she’s saying!”

Liam didn’t even look at him.

He pulled the sheet higher around Emma’s shoulders and spoke to the trauma team in a voice so cold it made everyone in the bay move faster.

“Call radiology.”

“Get forensic photography.”

“Full body documentation.”

“And page Detective Hale.”

Emma’s hand found his wrist and tightened with surprising strength.

“Don’t let him near me,” she whispered.

Liam leaned closer until his forehead nearly touched hers.

“He doesn’t get near you again.”

Behind him, Ethan kept shouting.

But now the officers were dragging him backward down the corridor, and for the first time in years, Emma was no longer alone with him.
