part 8

PART 8
Natalie did graduate the next morning.
Richard sat in the front row with Mara beside him.
He cried before her name was called.
Then cried harder when it was.
“Natalie Elise Hale.”
She walked across the stage slowly, as if part of her still expected someone to stop her.
No one did.
Richard stood.
Not because anyone else stood.
Because his body could not remain seated while his daughter crossed the stage from stolen death into public life.
Natalie saw him.
Her face crumpled.
Then she smiled.
A real smile.
The one from the portrait, but living.
After the ceremony, she introduced him to the people who had helped her.
A counselor.
A math teacher.
A foster mother named June who had never fully believed the paperwork.
June shook Richard’s hand.
“I knew someone was lying.”
Richard swallowed.
“Thank you for keeping her alive long enough for me to find her.”
June’s eyes filled.
“She kept herself alive.”
Natalie looked down.
Richard put an arm around her.
“She did.”
Back in Los Angeles, the case exploded.
Mara recovered forged guardianship papers.
Private clinic records.
Payments from the Hale Memorial Foundation into a shell nonprofit.
Mark had been stealing from Natalie’s inheritance fund.
Linda had helped cover it.
When Natalie found the transfers, they staged the crash using a burned stolen car and falsified identification through a clinic director who owed Linda money.
The body in the sealed coffin was later identified as an unidentified young woman from another county whose records had been manipulated.
That truth devastated Richard in a new way.
Someone else had been buried under his daughter’s name.
Someone else had been denied her own.
Richard ordered a proper investigation and memorial for her too.
Natalie asked if that was strange.
Richard shook his head.
“No one gets used twice in our grief.”
Linda was arrested first.
Mark next.
The clinic director tried to flee.
Mara’s people caught him at the airport.
When Richard returned home with Natalie, the estate gates opened slowly.
Natalie stared at the house.
Her hands shook.
Richard asked, “Do you want to go in?”
She looked at him.
“Only if they are gone.”
Richard answered, “They are.”
