Chapter 13 - THE PERSON IN MARK’S OFFICE
Police reached the house within minutes.
The intruder had already left.
Nothing valuable appeared missing.
The safe remained locked.
The computer had been seized weeks earlier.
Then Nora noticed a narrow strip of clean wood beneath the desk.
Something had been taped there.
Lily remembered Mark crouching beneath the desk on Friday evenings.
“He said he was fixing wires.”
Investigators searched the security footage.
The intruder wore a hood and gloves, but the person’s height and movement suggested a woman.
A vehicle camera captured part of the license plate.
It belonged to Dana Wells, the former clinic receptionist.
Police found her at home.
She denied entering Sarah’s house until Nora showed the vehicle record.
Then she asked for an attorney.
Dana admitted Mark contacted her before the assault and gave her a sealed packet.
He said if police arrested him, she should retrieve a second packet from beneath his desk and deliver both to his lawyer.
“What did you think was inside?” Nora asked.
“Medical records.”
“You sold him records illegally.”
“Yes.”
“Why help after a child nearly died?”
“He said Sarah would blame everyone around him.”
Dana had become trapped by her first crime. Mark threatened to expose her unless she continued.
She retrieved the packet after seeing news that the jury was deliberating.
Police recovered it from her car.
Inside were copies of Lily’s records, more forged notes, and a handwritten statement Mark wanted Dana to sign.
It claimed Sarah instructed the clinic to ignore Lily’s abdominal pain months earlier.
Dana had never received such instruction.
Mark prepared another witness before he needed one.
The second packet contained cash and a passport under Dana’s maiden name.
He expected her to flee after delivering the false statement.
She finally understood that he had planned to make her look like the primary source of the medical fraud.
Mark used people the same way he used documents.
He gave them one small illegal task, then turned their guilt into control.
Dana agreed to testify about the records and blackmail.
Her cooperation came too late to erase her crimes, but it prevented Mark’s final false evidence from entering court.
The jury returned the next morning.
Guilty of aggravated child abuse.
Guilty of poisoning.
Guilty of unlawful imprisonment.
Guilty of financial fraud and identity theft.
Guilty of attempted murder.
Sarah closed her eyes.
Mark displayed no reaction until the judge ordered him held for sentencing.
Then he turned toward Sarah.
“You still don’t know why David created the evidence account.”
Sarah did not answer.
He wanted one more question to control her attention.
She walked away.
Outside court, Nora said the break-in had been resolved.
Dana acted under delayed instructions.
No new mastermind existed.
The final threat remained part of Mark’s same plan.
Sarah felt relief.
Not because the damage was gone.
Because the truth had stopped expanding into endless shadows.
At home, Lily asked whether Mark was going to prison.
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“A judge will decide.”
“Can he come back before I’m grown?”
Sarah hesitated.
“The sentence may be long enough that you will be an adult.”
“That isn’t a promise.”
“No.”
Lily nodded.
She preferred honest uncertainty.
Grace arrived with David’s evidence-account records.
The account had one remaining file, encrypted under a code only Lily might recognize.
The password hint read:
The story we never finished.
Lily remembered a bedtime story David invented about a girl who hid truth inside three houses.
She entered the names of the houses.
The file opened.
