Chapter 7 - WHY THE BULLDOZERS WERE THEREThe bulldozers belonged to Hartley Site Works.

I hired them.

That fact looked terrible until the court record was read properly.

The eastern access parcel was not inside the mansion’s active ground-lease premises.

It had once been.

The 2001 subdivision removed it.

Years later Bellwether House LLC built:

A decorative stone security wall.

A guard pavilion.

Part of a widened service drive.

Those improvements crossed onto Hawthorne-owned land under a revocable access license.

When Bellwether defaulted, Hawthorne terminated the license.

Months before I bought the land.

Vanessa ignored the termination.

My acquisition included the right to take possession of that parcel.

I filed.

Court granted limited possession after notice.

Vanessa did not appeal until the machines moved.

The bulldozers were there to remove encroachments and restore the access boundary.

Not demolish Bellwether House.

No one had authority to bulldoze an occupied mansion.

My line:

“I just repossessed everything.”

Bad legal shorthand.

What I had repossessed that day was the eastern parcel and any removable encroachments covered by the order.

The larger reversionary fight remained.

I said so publicly.

That cost me some dramatic appeal.

Good.

Then Daniel asked:

“Why schedule machines the same morning Vanessa came?”

“I didn’t.”

“What?”

“Hartley scheduled based on the possession order.”

“So it was coincidence?”

“Partly.”

He stared.

“Absolutely nobody will believe that.”

“I knew they were coming that morning.”

“Mara.”

“I did not know Vanessa would stage a driveway confrontation.”

He laughed.

“Better.”

Could I have postponed the work after she arrived?

Yes.

I chose not to.

That was my decision.

Vanessa humiliated me.

I wanted her to watch the wall come down.

Not noble.

Not illegal.

I admitted it to Naomi.

She rubbed her forehead.

“Please stop providing emotionally honest sentences I have to keep away from cameras.”

The stay remained until property issues resolved.

Hartley repaired temporary barriers.

No more machines.

Then Vanessa’s security contractor filed an incident report.

During the confrontation, one of her men heard Vanessa say:

“If Mara won’t release the ground claim, we’ll use the freeze to starve her out.”

Naomi looked at me.

“Did you hear that?”

“No.”

“Daniel?”

“No.”

The guard, Thomas Reid, had resigned afterward.

Why?

Vanessa ordered him to block court-authorized surveyors from the eastern parcel.

He refused.

He also turned over emails.

One from Vanessa:

No access to Mara’s people even if sheriff accompanies. Make them force entry.

That was bad.

Another:

Once Friday refinancing closes, I can buy the ground out of bankruptcy.

Whose bankruptcy?

Mine?

Daniel’s?

Northstar’s?

Our accounts were not globally frozen.

But Vanessa apparently believed prolonged litigation would break us financially.

Then Thomas Reid gave Naomi one more screenshot.

Vanessa to Kessler:

If Mara delivers before closing, can we classify her as incapacitated for any ground consent issues?

My blood went cold.

Deliver.

May you like

My baby.

She was already thinking about whether childbirth could temporarily weaken my control.
