Chapter 5 - the child Clara never met
Martha refused to discuss the photograph.
Her lawyer objected to any questions about private medical history unrelated to Ethan.
Detective Torres agreed on one point:
The existence of another child did not automatically explain the cast.
But Daniel had specifically referenced Arizona.
That made it relevant.
The hospital bracelet carried a name.
BABY BOY HARRIS.
Mother:
Martha Harris.
Her maiden name.
Birth year:
Nine years before the present.
The baby would now be thirteen.
Clara stared.
“Martha was twenty-six.”
“Yes.”
“Before Daniel?”
“Two years before they met.”
Clara tried to remember.
Martha had disappeared from family gatherings for almost a year.
She told everyone she was working in Phoenix.
Maybe she had been pregnant.
“What happened to the baby?”
Torres found adoption records sealed by court order.
Nothing more could be disclosed without legal process.
The father field was blank.
Marcus asked:
“What does Nolan have to do with this?”
The storage-unit payment history answered part of it.
Nolan Pierce had paid the unit fees through Northline Consulting.
For nine years.
Long before Daniel fired him.
Long before the suspected financial theft.
Clara felt cold.
“They knew each other before Daniel.”
Yes.
How long before?
Phone records no longer existed that far back.
But an old social-media photograph showed Martha and Nolan at an Arizona charity event nine years earlier.
Standing close.
Too close to be strangers.
Martha eventually agreed to speak about only the timeline.
“Nolan helped me when I was alone.”
“Was he the child’s father?” Torres asked.
Martha looked away.
“No.”
“Did he arrange the adoption?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I asked.”
“What did he receive in return?”
“Nothing.”
Detective Torres did not believe that.
“What was the child’s name?”
Martha began crying.
“Jacob.”
Clara heard about the interview afterward.
She sat beside Marcus in silence.
“My sister had a son named Jacob.”
Marcus took her hand.
“She may have had reasons she couldn’t tell anyone.”
“She also hid evidence in Ethan’s cast.”
“Yes.”
Both truths remained separate until evidence connected them.
The connection came from Daniel’s hard drives.
One spreadsheet tracked payments labeled JH EDUCATION.
$12,000.
$18,000.
$25,000.
Every year.
Paid from Price Development through Northline Consulting.
Daniel had circled them digitally.
WHO IS JH?
Jacob Harris.
Nolan had apparently used Daniel’s company money to fund something connected to Martha’s first child.
Martha claimed she did not know the payments came from Daniel.
Torres asked:
“Where is Jacob?”
“I don’t know.”
“You arranged the adoption.”
“It was closed.”
“Nolan paid expenses for years.”
“He told me the adoptive family needed help.”
“Did you verify that?”
“No.”
“Why trust him?”
Martha looked toward the table.
“Because he had the records.”
“What records?”
Silence.
“Martha.”
“He said if Daniel found out about Jacob, he would leave me.”
Clara was stunned when told.
“Daniel wouldn’t have left her for having a child before him.”
Exactly.
So what about Jacob frightened Martha?
The answer may have been paternity.
Detective Torres requested the sealed adoption file only after the court determined it might relate to alleged financial coercion.
The biological father was not blank in the original record.
It had been redacted later.

Nolan Pierce.
Clara closed her eyes.
“Martha lied.”
Nolan was Jacob’s father.
Before Martha met Daniel.
Then years later Nolan became Daniel’s closest adviser.
That could not be coincidence.
Daniel may have unknowingly hired the father of his wife’s secret first child.
Or Nolan deliberately inserted himself into Daniel’s life.
The second possibility became more likely when Price Development’s earliest HR file surfaced.
Nolan applied directly to Daniel for a position.
His listed reference:
Martha Harris.
Daniel hired him three months after meeting Martha.
Clara whispered:
“They brought him in together.”
Maybe.
Martha insisted it was not planned.
According to her, she told Nolan she was dating Daniel.
Nolan asked for an introduction because he needed work.
She agreed.
Then Daniel and Nolan became friends.
Over years Nolan gained access to finances.
Martha’s old secret became leverage.
When she tried to distance herself, Nolan threatened to tell Daniel.
Daniel would not have cared about Jacob.
But Martha believed he would.
Fear made her easier to control.
That did not excuse later choices.
Detective Torres asked:
“When did Nolan put the capsule in Ethan’s cast?”
Martha cried.
“Three weeks ago.”
There it was.
“Were you there?”
“Yes.”
“Did you stop him?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“He said police were going to search my house.”
“Why would that matter?”
“The card had Daniel’s evidence.”
“You could have given it to police.”
Martha looked terrified.
“I couldn’t.”
“Why?”
“Because the other card has Jacob’s location.”
Torres stopped.
“What?”
Martha whispered:
“Nolan told me if the evidence ever reached police, I would never see Jacob alive again.”
The threat changed context.
Not responsibility.
Martha had been blackmailed.
But she had still allowed Ethan to suffer rather than ask for help.
Detective Torres asked the obvious question.
“Where is Nolan now?”
Martha stared at her.
“I don’t know.”
Then Ethan’s hospital room phone rang.
A nurse answered.
No one spoke.
Just breathing.
The call disconnected.
Hospital security traced it as far as a prepaid mobile line.
One text arrived on Martha’s seized phone seconds later.
