Chapter 7

The coin landed beside Celeste’s champagne glass with a clean metallic click.
Small sound.
Huge silence.
Daniel looked irritated at first.
Then confused when Celeste stopped breathing normally.
Richard Marrow saw the coin from several feet away and took one involuntary step backward.
That movement mattered more than any confession.
Jenna looked at him only briefly.
Enough to let him know she noticed.
Then she turned to Celeste.
“Your families were built with what he stole from me.”
Daniel scoffed.
“What are you talking about?”
Celeste did not speak.
Her hand hovered over the coin but did not touch it yet.
Jenna continued calmly.
“I’m not here to ruin your wedding.”
Daniel laughed once.
“You walked in with threats.”
“No,” Jenna said. “I walked in with the first payment.”
Richard’s face tightened.
Celeste finally looked up.
“What does that mean?”
Jenna’s expression remained controlled.
“Ask your father why a one-dollar consideration appeared in a land transfer recorded the day I vanished.”
Daniel’s anger weakened.
“Vanished?”
Jenna looked at him.
“You were thirteen. You were told I ran.”
“You did.”
“No. I was left.”
The words moved through the table like cold air.
Nearby guests leaned closer.
Celeste slowly lifted the coin.
Her fingers trembled.
“Where did you get that coin?”
Jenna’s eyes did not move from hers.
“At a desert gas station outside Phoenix. Your future father-in-law threw it at me before driving away.”
Daniel’s face went pale.
Celeste looked toward Richard.
May you like
Richard would not meet her eyes.
