Chapter 9

By 9:00 a.m. on New Year’s Day, my father had called forty-three times.

My mother called twelve.

Vivian sent twenty-seven texts.

The first few were angry.

Then confused.

Then afraid.

Then strangely sweet.

Claire, can we talk?

Claire, Mom is crying.

Claire, Dad did not mean it like that.

Claire, Daniel says the bank is asking questions.

Claire, please don’t punish me for what Dad said.

That last one was almost funny.

Vivian still believed consequences were punishments delivered by other people.

Not results grown from her own choices.

I did not answer.

I sat in my apartment overlooking the gray morning skyline and drank coffee without checking a single family transfer.

For the first time in years, January felt like a beginning instead of an invoice.

Daniel called at 10:15.

I answered.

He sounded exhausted.

“Claire.”

“Daniel.”

“Your father wants me to say the cancellation was a misunderstanding.”

“I assume you refused.”

“I did.”

That surprised me.

“Why?”

He was quiet for a long moment.

“Because I watched them do it.”

The words were simple.

They mattered.

He continued.

“I watched him humiliate you.”

“I watched Margaret hold your arm.”

“I watched Vivian toast it.”

“And then I opened the numbers.”

His voice tightened.

“I should have said something years ago.”

“Yes.”

He accepted it.

That was more than most people did.

“The bank is requesting updated disclosures.”

“Give them the accurate ones.”

“Your father will consider that betrayal.”

“No.”

I looked out at the city.

“He considers accuracy betrayal.”

Daniel exhaled.

“There is something else.”

Of course there was.

Families like mine always have another locked drawer.

“What?”

“Richard transferred company funds into a personal holding account last month.”

“How much?”

“Enough to trigger review.”

My coffee cooled in my hand.

“And where did it go?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Part of it appears connected to Vivian’s gallery.”

There it was.

The golden daughter was not just expensive.

She was implicated.

I closed my eyes.

Not from sadness.

From tired recognition.

“What do you need from me?”

“Permission to release the full ledger to outside counsel.”

I looked at my phone.

At my father’s missed calls.

At my mother’s texts.

At Vivian’s sudden desperation.

May you like

Then I said, “Release it.”
