Chapter 13 - the man with the syringe

The food-service worker was not hospital staff.

His uniform had been stolen.

Name:

Derek Cole.

No relation to Jenna.

Former Whitfield graduate assistant.

Keller recognized him.

“He worked under Vane.”

Twenty years earlier.

Daniel stared.

“How many of these people are still around?”

Too many.

Derek refused to speak.

The syringe contained a fast-acting sedative.

Not the memory-intervention drug.

Enough to incapacitate Daniel temporarily.

Why?

Maya suspected abduction.

Elena thought worse.

“They may want to run the original protocol again.”

“On me?”

“You’re a resistant subject.”

“Twenty-two years later?”

“They never got complete follow-up data.”

Daniel laughed without humor.

“You think this is still research?”

Elena looked at him.

“No.”

“It’s cleanup.”

That felt truer.

The attacker’s phone contained one message:

MERCER FIRST. DAUGHTER AFTER DISCHARGE.

Lily saw it.

Her face became pale beneath bandages.

Daniel leaned close.

“They’re not getting near you.”

Lily wrote:

DON’T PROMISE WHAT YOU CAN’T CONTROL.

He looked at her.

Sarah’s daughter.

Of course she had learned that.

He nodded.

“You’re right.”

Maya moved both of them to a protected federal medical wing.

No Whitfield systems.

No public room listing.

Grace transferred separately.

Harlan entered federal custody and agreed to testify.

Keller surrendered research credentials and provided full archive access.

Elena entered cooperation.

Whitmore faced federal charges.

Yet MIRROR access remained active.

Someone above—or outside—Whitfield controlled the infrastructure.

Digital forensics traced current logins.

Most routed through old research servers.

One physical authorization key had been used that morning.

Assigned to:

Dr. Adrian Keller.

Keller stared.

“My key is in my office.”

Police checked.

Gone.

Who could access it?

His lab manager.

Graduate staff.

Custodial personnel.

Then Lily wrote:

MY ROOMMATE.

Daniel looked at her.

“What?”

Her roommate, Sophie Kent, had visited Keller’s lab repeatedly because she dated one of his graduate assistants.

Lily wrote:

SHE ASKED ABOUT CARD.

“When?”

YESTERDAY.

Before the attack.

“What did she ask?”

IF KELLER KEY STILL WORKS BASEMENT.

Daniel stared.

“Why didn’t you tell us?”

DIDNT THINK.

Maya searched Sophie Kent’s phone.

No answer.

Dorm room empty.

Laptop gone.

Friends said she left campus overnight.

Was Sophie involved?

Maybe.

Or scared.

Lily wrote:

SHE KNEW I WAS LOOKING FOR GRACE.

That mattered.

Sophie may have told someone.

Maya traced her car.

Abandoned at a train station.

Ticket purchased to New York.

But security footage showed Sophie never boarded.

Another staged disappearance.

MIRROR again.

Then Grace asked to speak with Lily by secure video.

Her voice was weak.

“I know Sophie.”

Lily’s eyes widened.

Grace continued.

“She brought me food once.”

Maya leaned closer.

“When?”

“Two weeks ago.”

“Where?”

“The medical wing.”

“How did she get there?”

“I don’t know.”

“Was she helping them?”

Grace shook her head.

“She whispered that Lily was trying to find me.”

Sophie had been helping.

Secretly.

Then why ask about Keller’s key?

To steal it.

Maybe for Lily.

But someone intercepted her.

Another potential witness disappeared.

The current operator was cleaning up everyone touching B-17.

Grace remembered one more thing.

Sophie wore a small body camera disguised as a pendant when visiting.

“She said if they moved me, Lily would know.”

Where was the footage?

Possibly stored online.

Lily knew Sophie’s cloud password hint.

They accessed the account under warrant.

One uploaded video.

Sophie walking through the decommissioned medical wing.

Grace visible briefly.

Then Sophie enters a service elevator.

A man joins her.

Only his torso initially.

Suit.

Whitfield board pin.

He says:

“You shouldn’t be here.”

Sophie:

“Neither should she.”

The camera angle rises as Sophie looks up.

The man’s face appears.

Charles Vane.

Malcolm Vane’s brother.

The investor supposedly in Washington during Lily’s attack.

This video was two weeks earlier.

Charles knew Grace was being held.

He was involved.

Maybe not Lily’s physical attacker.

But part of the system.

The video continued.

Charles:

“Lily Mercer is becoming exactly what her mother was.”

Sophie:

“Good.”

Charles smiled.

“No. Dangerous.”

Then:

“Sarah should have understood that survival came with conditions.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

Charles knew Sarah was alive.

He knew her hiding terms.

Possibly helped enforce them.

Then Sophie asked:

“Where is Sarah?”

Charles replied:

“Ask Daniel’s friend Thomas.”

Thomas Mercer.

Still missing.

Maybe with Sarah.

Maybe protecting her.

Maybe controlling her.

The video ended after Charles grabbed Sophie’s pendant.

No further uploads.

Maya ordered Charles arrested.

His Washington alibi protected him only from Lily’s attack.

Not conspiracy.

Agents reached his home.

Gone.

Private jet records:

No departure.

Vehicle cameras:

No movement.

He had vanished before the investigation turned toward him.

But his office safe contained one document.

MIRROR SUCCESSION PLAN.

Samuel Whitmore listed as operational director.

Elena Price legal containment.

Harlan Reed security containment.

Charles Vane:

PROGRAM OWNER.

Daniel stared.

Whitmore ran it.

Charles owned it.

Then below:

SUCCESSOR: T. MERCER.

Thomas Mercer.

Mercury.

The whistleblower.

The man helping Sarah.
