Chapter 11 - the children who heard one voice

Victoria covered her ears.

“Make it stop.”

No one else heard the sound.

At first.

Then Ethan pressed his palms against his temples.

Lily dropped to her knees.

Across the control building, implanted children reacted together. Some whispered the same numbers. Others repeated fragments of memories that did not belong to them.

Amanda knelt beside a boy who was describing a kitchen fire in another state.

“He has never been there,” she said.

Maria studied the terminal.

“Phase Three is synchronizing the carriers.”

Rodrigo held Victoria.

“What does that mean?”

“Vale and Cross created a distributed memory network.”

“Speak plainly.”

“The children are sharing information through the implants.”

“That’s impossible.”

“It was impossible when I left the project.”

Cross’s face remained on the screen.

“The human brain is merely a biological communication system.”

Ms. Clara moved toward the terminal.

“They are children.”

“They are the first generation that will never lose knowledge.”

“They are in pain.”

“Adaptation requires stress.”

Rodrigo took the silver cane and struck the terminal.

The screen cracked, but Cross’s image appeared on another monitor.

“You cannot destroy a network by breaking one machine.”

Officer Reed examined the facility map.

“There must be a transmission source.”

Maria pointed toward a tower icon.

“The reservoir antenna.”

“Can we disable it?”

“Locally. But Phase Three is national.”

“Then we stop this node first.”

Cole stayed beside Ethan.

“I’m not leaving him.”

“You don’t have to,” Reed said. “Protect the children.”

Reed, Rodrigo, Maria, Ms. Clara, and Amanda moved toward the tower access stairs. Dr. Warren remained behind to monitor Victoria and the others.

The abandoned facility came alive around them. Doors locked. Emergency lights turned red.

Cross’s voice followed.

“Maria, you always lacked the courage to finish what you began.”

Maria leaned on Rodrigo as she walked.

“I had the courage to regret it.”

“Regret is vanity. It allows guilty people to imagine they remain moral.”

Ms. Clara looked at Maria.

Cross’s cruelty contained an uncomfortable truth.

Maria had helped build the system. Saving children now would not erase that.

Maria seemed to understand.

“I’m not asking forgiveness.”

Rodrigo said nothing.

They reached the tower chamber.

A massive transmitter rose through the center of the building. Blue light pulsed along fiber lines connected to the underground network.

Amanda found the shutdown console.

“Founder authorization required.”

Maria looked toward Victoria’s location below.

“We cannot use her again.”

Rodrigo lifted Dr. Vale’s silver cane.

“His biometric key opened the ledger.”

“It may authorize hardware control.”

They connected the cane.

The console accepted it.

MANUAL SHUTDOWN AVAILABLE.

A warning appeared.

TERMINATING NODE WILL ERASE ALL STORED DONOR CONSCIOUSNESS.

Rodrigo read it twice.

“What does that mean?”

Maria’s face changed.

“The source memories stored at North Ridge will be destroyed.”

“Including yours?”

“My transferred copy.”

“You’re standing here.”

“The woman in this body is incomplete.”

Rodrigo stared at her.

“What are you saying?”

“Years of my memories were extracted. Some remain in the system.”

“Can they be restored?”

“Possibly.”

“If we shut it down?”

“They disappear.”

Ms. Clara looked toward the lower floor, where the children were screaming.

Maria placed her hand on the shutdown control.

“There is no choice.”

Rodrigo caught her wrist.

“You lost years of your life.”

“They are already lost.”

“They could be recovered.”

“At the cost of children carrying my memories?”

He released her slowly.

Maria entered the command.

The transmitter began powering down.

Cross’s image finally showed anger.

“You have no idea what you are erasing.”

Maria looked into the nearest camera.

“I know exactly what I’m erasing.”

She pressed EXECUTE.

Blue light collapsed through the tower.

Below, the children stopped screaming.

Victoria opened her eyes.

For several seconds, silence held.

Then Maria fell.

Rodrigo caught her.

She looked at him with confusion.

“Who are you?”

His face broke.

“Maria?”

She stared at Victoria through the glass below.

“Who is that child?”

The shutdown had erased more than the stored copy.

It had taken the memories linked to Maria’s implant.

Rodrigo held her, unable to speak.

Ms. Clara looked at the national map.

Most red points had gone dark.

But seven remained active.

One began moving.

Not a school.

A mobile transmission unit.

Officer Reed’s radio came alive.

A familiar voice spoke.

Principal Hall.

“Clara, if you can hear me, Cross took the mobile node. She’s heading toward Oak Valley.”

Ms. Clara stared at the radio.

Hall was alive.

His message continued.

May you like

“And she has a child with her who looks exactly like Victoria.”

👉 Shutting down North Ridge saved the children but erased Maria’s memories, while Cross escaped with a mysterious girl identical to Victoria.
