Chapter 13 - the second betrayal

Jonathan Price contacted police through an attorney the next morning.

He wanted immunity.

He would not get full immunity.

But prosecutors agreed to hear him.

Price looked older than his photographs.

Tired.

Not frightened enough.

Caroline began:

“Why did Ryan pay you?”

“To advise him privately.”

“About Claire?”

“About Judith.”

“Why?”

“Ryan did not trust his mother.”

Claire almost laughed when she heard.

He trusted Judith enough to let her drug Lucas.

But not enough to trust what happened afterward.

Price explained.

Ryan knew Judith wanted control of the children’s trusts.

He also knew she might eventually try to remove him.

He found the draft petition against himself months earlier.

“He knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then why continue?”

“Because he believed he could use Judith first.”

Everyone had been using everyone.

Ryan planned to let Judith build the false medical case.

Then after Claire lost custody, he intended to expose Judith’s nursing history and remove her from the children’s lives.

Ryan would remain sole parent.

Lauren would move in.

Trusts accessible.

Judith gone.

“Did Judith know?”

“No.”

“And you were Ryan’s protection.”

“Yes.”

“What did he ask you to do?”

“Ensure hospital documentation remained favorable to him if Judith lost control.”

“Meaning?”

“If Lucas arrived sick, the chart should reflect concerns about Claire, not Ryan.”

Claire stared.

Price planned to manipulate medical interpretation.

Again.

He insisted he did not authorize giving Lucas a sedative.

“Did you know Judith intended to stop antibiotics?”

“I knew she discussed withholding one dose.”

“One?”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell Ryan not to?”

“Yes.”

“Did he?”

“No.”

“So you kept helping.”

Price looked down.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Money.”

At least he said it plainly.

Price used Karen’s unattended workstation after Claire arrived.

He saw the tox order.

Panicked.

Sent Judith:

Destroy dosage notes before Sterling orders tox.

The text investigators thought might be from Calvin.

Price had remote access to the burner account because Ryan gave him the credentials.

He hoped to erase evidence tying himself to advice.

Instead, he tied himself directly.

Then Price revealed another piece.

Ryan had created a private recording system at home.

Not the kitchen camera.

A small audio recorder hidden inside Ava’s teddy bear.

Claire stared.

“What?”

Price said Ryan wanted proof if Ava repeated “false statements” from Claire.

He hid a recorder inside the bear months earlier.

Ava found the zipper while playing.

She did not know what the device was.

Later, when she wanted to hide Lucas’s medication, she remembered the compartment.

Police collected Bunny.

Inside, behind the bottles, was a tiny recorder.

Still active.

Weeks of audio.

Ryan had accidentally created the evidence that would destroy him.

Forensics began reviewing.

One recording:

Ryan and Judith.

Ryan:

“When Claire is out, Lauren moves in.”

Judith:

“No.”

Ryan:

“What?”

Judith:

“Lauren is temporary.”

Ryan:

“That’s not your decision.”

Judith:

“Everything involving those children becomes my decision if you keep failing.”

Another:

Ryan:

“I know about the petition against me.”

Long silence.

Judith:

“You went through my files?”

Ryan:

“You don’t own me.”

Judith:

“I paid your debts.”

Ryan:

“And I’m paying you back.”

Judith:

“With Claire’s money.”

Ryan:

“With the trust after custody.”

Clear motive.

Clear conspiracy.

Clear planned betrayal.

Then another recording changed the emotional center.

Ava entered the room.

Her small voice:

“Why are you talking about Mommy’s money?”

Judith:

“Go upstairs.”

Ava:

“Is Mommy leaving?”

Ryan:

“No.”

Ava:

“You said when Claire is out.”

Silence.

Ryan:

“You heard wrong.”

Ava:

“No, I didn’t.”

That was the moment Judith began labeling Ava a problem.

OLDER CHILD OBSERVES TOO MUCH.

Then another recording:

Judith:

“She needs to stop listening.”

Ryan:

“She’s seven.”

Judith:

“Seven-year-olds testify.”

Claire felt physically ill.

They had discussed her daughter as a legal threat.

Price said he knew nothing about that.

Caroline believed him only partly.

Then one final recording surfaced.

Three weeks before Lucas’s infection.

Unknown male voice.

Price identified himself.

Price:

“If you’re determined to do this, no child gets harmed.”

Judith:

“Agreed.”

Ryan:

“Agreed.”

Price:

“You create documentation. Nothing else.”

Judith:

“Patterns require symptoms.”

Price:

“Then use real symptoms when they occur. Do not create them.”

Judith:

“We’ll handle it.”

Price:

“No.”

A chair moved.

Then Judith’s voice became cold.

“You already took the money, Jonathan.”

Price stopped.

He had tried to draw a moral line after joining a criminal scheme.

Too late.

He still continued.

Caroline asked:

“Who first suggested waiting for a real illness?”

Price answered:

“Ryan.”

Claire stopped breathing.

Ryan had been watching Lucas for an opportunity.

When the ear infection appeared, he recognized it.

A real prescription.

A real reason for the child to worsen if treatment stopped.

A perfect moment.

Judith escalated to the sedative.

Ryan allowed it.

Then Price said something else.

“There was supposed to be another step.”

“What?”

“Claire’s blood.”

Caroline stared.

“What about it?”

“Ryan wanted a sedative placed in Claire’s drink the night Lucas went to the ER.”

Claire went cold.

Ryan planned for her to be too impaired to take Lucas herself.

He would bring the baby.

He would tell doctors Claire had been overmedicating both herself and Lucas.

Toxicology would show medication in Claire too.

A matched narrative.

“Did they drug her?”

“No,” Price said.

“Ava refused the sleepover, Lucas worsened early, and Claire left before Ryan could do it.”

Claire thought of the coffee Ryan had prepared that evening.

She had forgotten it on the counter while rushing Lucas into the car.

Police had photographed the kitchen.

The mug still existed in evidence.

Testing showed traces of Claire’s prescription anti-anxiety medication at far above normal drink contamination.

Someone had crushed tablets into it.

Ryan’s fingerprints covered the mug.

👉 Ryan had planned to make Claire appear drugged at the same time Lucas arrived sedated—creating a medical story in which mother and baby seemed connected by the same “mistake.”
