Chapter 15 - the birthday candle that went out

Police found Reed’s stolen car abandoned near the river.

Blood marked the steering wheel, but none belonged to him.

The photograph of Rachel had been taken three days earlier, before she entered federal protection.

Investigators moved her again.

Reed disappeared into Cedar Rapids without using a phone, bank card, or registered vehicle.

Claire refused to cancel Lily’s small birthday celebration.

Fear had already taken the first one.

She would not allow Reed to own the second.

Two officers guarded the street.

Ruiz remained inside.

The curtains stayed closed, but the kitchen glowed warmly beneath ordinary pendant lights.

No chandelier.

No champagne.

No relatives waiting to judge whether Lily behaved like a Lawson.

Lily wore comfortable yellow pajamas instead of the torn unicorn dress.

Bunny sat in the chair beside her.

Claire placed six candles in the chocolate cake.

“You get one wish,” she said.

“Can I have six?”

“You can try.”

Lily smiled.

It was not the easy smile she had worn before the party.

It was smaller, more cautious, and completely hers.

Claire lit the candles.

Before Lily could blow them out, the doorbell rang.

Every adult became still.

Ruiz checked the camera.

A woman stood on the porch carrying a weathered metal box.

Rachel.

Her protective officers were not with her.

Claire opened the speaker without unlocking the door.

“What are you doing here?”

Rachel looked over her shoulder.

“I had to bring this before Malcolm found me.”

“Where are your agents?”

“I left through the clinic service exit.”

“Why?”

“Because one of them answered to Reed.”

Ruiz called the protection team immediately.

They had discovered Rachel missing fifteen minutes earlier.

Claire kept the door locked.

“What is in the box?”

“The original adoption file.”

“We already found it.”

“No. You found Malcolm’s version.”

Rachel raised a silver key.

It looked identical to the one Vanessa surrendered.

“There were three keys.”

Claire felt cold.

“Who gave Patricia hers?”

“I did.”

Lily stood behind Claire holding Bunny.

Rachel saw her through the narrow glass panel.

Her face broke with emotion.

She did not approach.

Six years earlier, Patricia contacted Rachel before the adoption.

She promised housing and money if Rachel helped preserve records proving Malcolm Reed’s paternity.

Patricia did not want Lily in the family.

She wanted evidence she could use against Reed whenever he challenged Robert.

Rachel gave her a silver archive key Malcolm had once left in her apartment.

In exchange, Patricia ensured the adoption proceeded and Reed stayed silent.

“I thought Claire and Evan were safe,” Rachel said. “I thought giving Patricia leverage would keep Malcolm away from Lily.”

“You gave someone who hated my daughter a weapon,” Claire said.

“Yes.”

Rachel did not defend the choice.

“I was afraid he would take her.”

“So you trusted Patricia?”

“I trusted Patricia’s hatred of Malcolm.”

Fear had built another agreement around Lily without her knowledge.

Ruiz asked Rachel to place the box on the porch and step back.

Rachel obeyed.

The officers retrieved it after checking for devices.

Inside was a handwritten contract between Patricia and Rachel.

Patricia agreed to protect Lily’s adoption.

Rachel agreed never to reveal Malcolm’s paternity publicly.

A second document carried Evan’s signature.

Acknowledgment of private paternal claim.

Claire stared at it.

Evan had supposedly learned Reed’s paternity only months before his death.

The document was dated three years earlier.

Either Evan had known far longer—

or someone had forged his signature again.

The box also contained a memory card.

Ruiz inserted it into an isolated laptop.

A video appeared.

Evan sat inside Malcolm Reed’s office while Rachel stood beside the door.

The date stamp was six months before Lily’s adoption became final.

Malcolm placed papers on the desk.

“If you proceed,” Reed said, “you accept that I may reclaim contact later.”

Evan answered:

“You terminated your rights.”

“I am her biological father.”

“You are the man who hid her.”

Rachel began crying in the recording.

Evan turned toward her.

“Do you want this adoption?”

“Yes.”

“Are you being threatened?”

Rachel looked toward Malcolm.

Then toward the camera.

“No.”

The word sounded false.

Evan refused to sign Malcolm’s private agreement.

He tore the document in half.

The video ended.

Claire examined the acknowledgment carrying Evan’s signature.

It could not be genuine.

Someone had reconstructed the document after filming the refusal.

Why preserve both the forgery and the video exposing it?

Rachel whispered from the porch:

“Because Patricia wanted control over Malcolm, and Malcolm wanted control over Evan. I kept the truth in case either came for Lily.”

“You waited six years.”

“Yes.”

“You could have warned us.”

“Yes.”

The repeated acknowledgment of failure did not make the consequences disappear.

Before Claire could answer, Rachel’s eyes moved toward the street.

Her face drained of color.

“He found me.”

A dark sedan had stopped beyond the police barricade.

The driver remained hidden behind the windshield.

Officers moved toward it.

The vehicle accelerated backward and vanished around the corner.

Ruiz ordered Rachel inside temporarily.

The moment the door opened, Lily retreated behind Claire.

Rachel stopped at the threshold.

She did not reach for the child.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

Lily looked at her.

“Are you my first mom?”

Rachel’s eyes filled.

“I’m the woman who gave birth to you.”

“Did you give me away?”

“I chose for Claire and Evan to become your parents.”

“Did Grandma pay you?”

Rachel closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Lily hugged Bunny tighter.

“That’s too much for my birthday.”

Claire nearly cried.

“You’re right.”

They moved the box into evidence storage.

Rachel was escorted to a secure room.

Ruiz remained while Lily returned to the table.

The candles had burned low.

One flame had gone out by itself.

Claire relit it.

“You still have your wishes.”

Lily leaned forward.

Before she blew, Bunny made a faint electronic sound.

A single beep.

Claire lifted the toy.

The hidden pocket beneath its foot had been empty since police removed the blue key.

Now something hard rested inside.

The seam had been opened and restitched while Bunny remained in hospital evidence.

Ruiz cut the thread carefully.

A tiny transmitter fell onto the table.

It was active.

Someone had placed it inside after the attack, allowing Reed to track Lily wherever the toy went.

Beneath the transmitter was a folded strip of paper.

Claire recognized Evan’s handwriting.

She opened it.

Malcolm is Lily’s biological father.

But he is not the man Patricia is protecting.

Claire read the sentence twice.

On the reverse side, Evan had written another name.

Before she could say it aloud, every light in the house went dark.

The security system announced:

FRONT DOOR UNLOCKED.

A floorboard creaked in the hallway.

Lily’s six candles flickered in the sudden darkness.

Rachel whispered from the secured room:

“Claire, Malcolm never worked alone.”

The kitchen door handle began turning.
