Chapter 1

He Brought Divorce Papers to the NICU Until One Call Brought the Colonel.

Callie Harlan lay in a hospital bed under cold blue NICU lighting, one hand curled around her black smartphone and the other resting weakly over the cream blanket across her abdomen.

Every breath hurt.

The emergency C-section had left her body trembling, but she did not look away from Russell.

Behind her, inside two separate illuminated incubators, Jonah and Elise slept beneath steady monitors.

Their premature bodies were so small that every beep felt like a prayer being counted.

Russell Harlan stood beside her bed in a charcoal business suit, clean and rested, holding a black divorce folder and a pen.

Tessa Blake stood close to him in Callie’s cream wool coat.

Callie noticed the coat before she noticed the papers.

That was the cruelty of it.

The woman beside her husband was wearing something Callie had packed for the ride home with the twins.

Russell thrust the folder closer to her chest.

“You signed everything. There’s nothing left for you.”

Callie lowered her phone.

She looked past him toward the doorway.

The heavy footsteps stopped behind Russell.

He did not understand why the room suddenly felt different.

Then Colonel James Whitaker stepped fully into the NICU room in formal military uniform, medals catching the warm hallway light behind him.

His eyes fixed on Russell.

“Step away from her bed.”

Russell’s hand froze above the folder.

Tessa gripped the lapels of Callie’s stolen coat.

“Russell… who is that?”

Russell turned.

The color left his face.

Colonel Whitaker crossed the room and took the divorce folder from Russell’s hand without opening it.

Russell swallowed.

“Callie, what did you tell him?”

Callie slowly sat straighter, pain flashing across her face.

Then she raised her phone, showing only that the call was still connected.

“Only what you were arrogant enough to say in front of witnesses.”

The monitors behind her kept beeping.

Tessa released the coat.

Russell stared at the unopened folder in the colonel’s hand.

And for the first time since entering the NICU, he understood the woman he thought too weak to fight had not been alone when he confessed.
