Chapter 8 - THE BABY WITH TWO BRACELETSAva’s daughter was delivered shortly before midnight.
The baby cried immediately.
The sound cut through the operating room with a strength Ava had feared she would never hear.
Dr. Bennett placed the infant against Ava’s chest while the independent nurse read every identifying mark aloud.
Girl.
Four pounds, nine ounces.
Small birthmark beneath the left shoulder.
Five fingers on each hand.
Five toes on each foot.
No electronic bracelet was attached.
Officer Cole wrote the details by hand and signed the page beside two witnesses.
“Her name is Hope,” Ava whispered.
The baby opened her eyes briefly.
No one took her from the room.
Outside, police captured the intruder who used Cole’s fingerprint. She carried a transparent film containing his copied print and wore a hospital security uniform.
Her name was Laura Wynn.
Dr. Claire Wynn’s younger sister.
Claire had claimed Laura died during childhood.
Another false death.
Laura managed identity replication for Maternal Continuity. She collected prints from forms, duplicated badges and created matching records for the two planned births.
She refused to reveal Sabrina’s location.
Then Natalie’s phone received a message from Emily.
Sabrina delivered. Baby alive. Diana escaped.
No address appeared.
Detective Ellis traced the message to an ambulance moving toward the interstate.
Police stopped the vehicle.
Inside they found Sabrina, exhausted but conscious, holding another newborn girl.
Emily sat beside her.
Diana was gone.
The second woman from the delivery-room feed had vanished as well.
Natalie approached the ambulance cautiously.
Emily looked older than her photographs, but her voice was unchanged.
The sisters embraced without speaking.
Their reunion lasted only seconds before Ellis demanded an explanation.
“Who was the second woman?”
Emily looked toward the road.
“Someone Diana trained to replace me.”
Maternal Continuity maintained duplicates of important witnesses. If Emily exposed the clinic, another woman could appear publicly, contradict her history and challenge her identity.
The substitute had undergone cosmetic surgery and carried Emily’s old documents.
“She has been signing statements in my name for years,” Emily said.
“What statements?”
“Statements claiming Natalie harassed me. Statements approving the embryo transfers. Statements saying Ava consented.”
The real Emily had become legally weaker than the woman wearing her name.
Sabrina’s baby was examined independently.
DNA testing confirmed the child was genetically related to Ava and Lucas.
The clinic had used Ava’s preserved embryo.
Sabrina was devastated.
“Am I still her mother?”
“You carried her,” Emily said. “You protected her when you learned the truth. No laboratory gets to erase that.”
The child had two hospital bracelets.
One said BABY VALE.
The second said HOPE REED.
Diana intended both infants to share the same identity.
Ava’s biological daughter from her pregnancy and the child carried by Sabrina could be exchanged depending on which legal outcome favored the trust.
Detective Ellis ordered the second bracelet preserved.
Inside its plastic lining was a microchip.
The chip contained a guardianship order signed by a judge.
The order granted temporary custody of “the surviving Hope Reed” to Diane.
It had been authorized one hour before either baby was born.
The judge’s digital signature was valid.
The judge denied signing it.
A security camera showed someone entering his chambers that evening.
The woman wore Ava’s face.
Ava stared at the image.
Maternal Continuity had not merely copied Diane and Emily.
