Chapter 4 - THE VIDEO BY THE PEN

Madame Grace had one more thing.

She had not sent it with the letter because she feared Adrian would intercept the package.

It was a memory card from a trail camera.

“I put it near the pig pen after I found Robert there the first time,” she told Michael. “Adrian kept saying your father wandered. I wanted to know if that was true.”

They watched the footage in Clara’s rented office above the pharmacy.

Michael stood behind the chair.

Madame Grace sat with both hands on her cane.

Detective Reyes watched from the wall.

The first clips showed animals.

Rain.

Mud.

Robert sitting alone beneath the metal shelter.

Then one clip began at 10:42 p.m.

Headlights crossed the field.

Adrian’s truck stopped near the pig pen.

Two men pulled Robert from the passenger side.

Robert was barefoot.

He stumbled.

Adrian got out and pointed toward the shelter.

Audio crackled, but the words were clear enough.

“You sleep where you belong if you keep asking about Michael.”

Robert’s voice was faint.

“My son sent money.”

Adrian laughed.

“Your son sends money to me. That’s the closest he gets.”

Robert tried to stand straighter.

“I want my house.”

Adrian stepped close.

“You signed it away.”

“I didn’t.”

Adrian shoved him.

Not hard enough to knock him down.

Hard enough to make an old man remember the next shove could be worse.

“You did whatever I say you did.”

Madame Grace covered her mouth.

Michael did not move.

On the screen, Adrian turned to the two men.

“If anyone sees him, he wandered again. Understand?”

One man nodded.

The other looked away.

Then the truck left.

Robert sat in the mud for thirteen minutes before crawling beneath the sheet metal.

The video ended.

No one spoke.

Michael felt something inside him go quiet in a way he would never fully trust again.

Detective Reyes said, “That’s enough for an arrest warrant.”

Clara replied, “And emergency asset freeze.”

Madame Grace whispered, “I should have done more.”

Michael turned to her.

“You did what everyone else refused to do.”

“I waited too long.”

“So did I.”

Neither forgave themselves in that room.

But guilt did not get to be the center anymore.

Robert did.

Adrian was arrested the next morning at his hill house.

He was wearing a white shirt and shouting into his phone when deputies walked through the gate.

The charges began with elder abuse, neglect, unlawful restraint, financial exploitation, forgery, fraud, and conspiracy.

More would come.

Peter Lang tried to leave town.

He was stopped at the regional airport.

Dr. Samuel Voss, the physician who had signed Robert’s incapacity statement after a ten-minute exam arranged by Adrian, surrendered his license temporarily pending investigation.

The notary admitted under questioning that Robert had not been present for at least two signatures.

She cried.

Detective Reyes did not comfort her.

Tears after payment are not repentance.

They are weather.

Adrian’s first statement was predictable.

Robert was difficult.

Michael was greedy.

Madame Grace was senile.

The video was taken out of context.

The money was used for care.

The house was legally transferred.

He loved his father.

Michael watched the interrogation recording later.

At that last sentence, he paused the video.

He looked at Adrian’s frozen face on the screen.

Then said, “He was never your father when he needed a bed.”
