PART 2

The paramedics didn't waste a second. One checked Elena's pulse while another placed an oxygen mask over her face. The cardiac monitor began to beep, each sound proving what I already knew—my wife was still alive. My mother took a slow step backward, but the police officer at the doorway noticed immediately.

"Nobody leaves," he ordered.

Marcus forced a laugh that fooled no one. "This is ridiculous. She's obviously beyond saving."

The lead paramedic looked up sharply.

"No," she replied. "She's been heavily sedated. Whoever declared her dead had no medical authority."

The room fell silent.

I looked directly at my mother.

"Who signed the death certificate?"

She hesitated.

For the first time in my life, my mother had no answer.

The officer quietly requested everyone's identification while another detective photographed the coffin, the funeral cloth, and several unlabeled medicine bottles sitting on a nearby table.

One bottle was still half full.

The paramedic slipped it into an evidence bag without saying a word.

As they carried Elena toward the ambulance, her fingers twitched around mine.

Then, barely audible, she whispered one frightened word.

"Daniel..."

Relief nearly brought me to my knees.

"You're safe," I told her. "I'm here now."

She tried to speak again, but exhaustion pulled her back into unconsciousness.

Outside, neighbors had gathered behind the police tape, watching the flashing emergency lights illuminate the quiet street. Rumors spread faster than the sirens had arrived.

Inside the house, detectives asked my mother and Marcus separate questions.

Their stories didn't match.

Not about the doctor.

Not about the funeral arrangements.

Not even about the exact time Elena had supposedly died.

Then my smartwatch vibrated.

A secure message from the investigators I had hired while working in the UAE appeared on the screen.

Urgent. We found the missing inheritance documents. Do not trust anyone inside the family. Your mother's signature is only the beginning.

I stared at the message.

This had never been only about Elena.

Someone had planned to bury far more than my wife that night.

Then a detective walked toward me carrying a locked metal box discovered beneath my father's old desk.

"My guess," he said quietly, "is that you'll want to open this yourself."
