Chapter 15 - THE BUTTON THAT BECAME MECHANICAL AGAIN

The stewardship trust permitted engineers to study Halo without using identifiable Aegis data.

They found that the basic canopy design could save people at sufficient altitude.

The dangerous part was not only the fabric.

It was authority.

Halo allowed software to override the wearer.

Engineers removed the algorithmic lock.

The redesigned system contained a physical release cable protected by a cover. Software could warn.

It could not refuse.

Training emphasized that emergency descent remained a last resort. Pilots were never told to abandon aircraft capable of controlled landing.

Every deployment record stated its limitations.

Altitude.

Body fit.

Aircraft configuration.

Weather.

Rescue availability.

No successful event became proof that the next person would survive.

Talia joined the redesign committee for four meetings.

Then she resigned.

“I do not want falling to become my profession.”

The board accepted her decision without asking her to endorse the final product.

Her settlement funded medical care, lost income, and vocational training. She returned to aviation as a ground-safety instructor.

She did not jump again.

Nadia Cole completed her sentence and lost professional certification for a defined period. Later, she worked in an engineering role without authority to sign safety approvals.

Some people believed she should never work in aviation again.

Others called her a whistleblower.

She had been neither one simple thing.

She warned the company.

She also signed the report.

Both remained in the record.

Theo Marsh never returned to Vespera. He taught archival ethics after settling the civil claims.

Grace attended one of his public lectures anonymously.

He said:

“Useful data is not ownerless data.”

Afterward, she told me the sentence angered her.

“Because it’s true?”

“Because he needed to hurt people before saying it.”

Grace continued flying.

She did not become a Vespera executive.

At twenty-four, she entered a graduate program in human factors and flight-safety law. She said engineers understood machines, lawyers understood rules, and pilots understood how quickly both could become irrelevant in the wrong cockpit.

I asked whether she chose the field because of Richard.

“No.”

“Because of Aegis?”

“Partly.”

“Because of Talia?”

“Partly.”

“What is the rest?”

“I like airplanes.”

The ordinary answer relieved me.

That was not her responsibility.

It was mine.

Vespera separated incident-data governance from product engineering. Neither department could approve its own access requests. People represented inside records received notices when nonessential use was proposed.

The process became slower.

Several research partners complained.

One withdrew.

The sky did not collapse.

The new descent system received limited certification after years of testing. It carried no Vale name.

No image of me.

No reference to Grace.

Its training label said:

THIS DEVICE MAY REDUCE SOME RISKS.

IT DOES NOT CREATE A SAFE FALL.

The red button was replaced with a covered metal handle.

Lena approved the mechanical design.

She refused to call it foolproof.

“Fools are rarely the only people involved,” she said.

At the first public demonstration, a weighted dummy deployed over a controlled range.

No human volunteer.

No cheering when the canopy opened.

Engineers measured the result.

Recorded the failures.

Reset the equipment.

Tested again.

Grace stood beside me.

“Does this feel like taking Aegis back?” she asked.

“No.”

“Why?”

“It never belonged to Richard or Sable.”

“Who did it belong to?”

“The engineers who built it. The company that funded it. The people recorded inside it. The public systems that may rely on it.”

“That sounds inconvenient.”

“Ownership usually becomes inconvenient when described accurately.”

Grace smiled.
