Chapter 4 - The Locked DeckEmergency lighting washed the casino in red.

Passengers began asking questions, but crew members had no answers. Daniel tried his radio again. Static.

Walter’s software had not disabled the entire ship.

It had isolated internal security channels and unlocked selected cabins.

That precision meant someone was operating the system in real time.

Daniel ordered officers to use runners and physical keys. Ashlynn stayed close to Evelyn, who had begun shaking visibly.

“Where is Walter’s control station?” Daniel asked.

“He prefers places with no windows.”

“That describes half the ship.”

“He also needs direct access to communications.”

Daniel thought of the restricted officer’s cabin beside the communications center.

Security had searched it.

The laptops remained powered, but Walter was gone.

A crew member arrived breathless from the stairwell.

“Gregory escaped the interview room.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“How?”

“The lock opened. The camera went black.”

Ashlynn knew exactly where he would go.

“The honeymoon suite.”

“Why?”

“The conduct agreement and bat are still there.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Evidence was removed.”

“My bouquet wasn’t.”

The bridal bouquet lay near the bed when security entered. Ashlynn remembered Gregory becoming strangely protective when she tried to throw it away after the reception.

Walter had selected the florist.

The flowers might contain another tracker, recording device, or document.

Daniel sent two officers toward the suite.

Ashlynn insisted on accompanying them.

“No.”

“I know Gregory’s behavior.”

“You are the target.”

“Which is why I know where he’ll go.”

Daniel looked at the dead radio.

Without full communications, every decision became riskier.

He finally agreed on the condition that Ashlynn remain behind the officers.

Evelyn stayed with Rachel and another guard.

The stairwell to the honeymoon deck was empty.

Heart-shaped honeymoon decorations still hung outside several cabins, absurd against the red emergency lights.

When they reached the suite, the door stood open.

The rose-covered bed had been torn apart.

The bouquet lay scattered across the carpet.

Gregory knelt near it, ripping stems open with a silver dinner knife.

He looked up.

His fear turned instantly into rage.

“This is your fault.”

Ashlynn stayed behind Daniel.

“What are you looking for?”

Gregory’s eyes moved toward a white rose near the balcony.

He lunged.

Daniel blocked him.

The other officer recovered the rose using gloves.

Inside the hollow plastic stem was a micro-storage device.

Gregory stopped struggling.

“Give it to me.”

Daniel placed it inside an evidence pouch.

“What’s on it?”

Gregory’s jaw clenched.

“My mother’s confession.”

Ashlynn looked at him.

“Confession to what?”

Gregory laughed bitterly.

“You think she’s a victim because she showed you one photograph?”

Evelyn had helped Walter maintain the family system for years. According to Gregory, she identified women considered unsuitable, gathered personal records, and coached sons on how to establish dominance without leaving obvious evidence.

“She carried the sedatives,” Gregory said. “She watched you through the receiver. She knew exactly what was supposed to happen.”

“She was afraid of Walter.”

“So was I.”

Ashlynn’s expression hardened.

“Fear explains why you learned cruelty. It does not explain why you chose to swing a bat.”

Gregory looked toward the balcony.

The Florida coastline had disappeared completely. Only darkness and moonlit water stretched beyond the glass.

“My father said if I failed tonight, I would lose everything.”

“What?”

“The company. The trust. My name.”

“And you believed that justified terrorizing me?”

“I believed you would understand after the first lesson.”

Ashlynn felt grief rise beneath anger.

This was the man who had cried during their vows.

The man who remembered how she took her coffee.

The man who told her he admired her strength.

He admired it only while believing marriage would transfer it to him.

Daniel asked Gregory where Walter was.

Gregory refused.

The officer lifted the storage device.

“Then this may answer for you.”

Gregory’s face changed.

“Don’t connect it to the ship.”

“Why?”

“It carries an automatic transmission trigger.”

Daniel stared at him.

“To whom?”

“My father’s external server. If the file opens, he’ll know exactly where it was accessed.”

Ashlynn noticed the champagne bottle beside the balcony door.

Its foil seal had been disturbed before the confrontation. A thin cable ran from the bottle bucket toward the wall outlet.

She pointed.

“There.”

Daniel disconnected the cable.

Inside the decorative bottle base was another transmitter.

Walter had layered the suite with devices.

The microphone beneath the bed.

The bouquet drive.

The bottle relay.

The honeymoon decorations had been a surveillance system.

A ship technician arrived carrying a manual communications unit. He reported partial control restored, but the cargo deck remained locked electronically.

Daniel showed him Evelyn’s brass key.

They moved toward the freight stairwell.

Gregory was restrained temporarily with ship-issued safety straps—not formally arrested, but prevented from fleeing again.

Ashlynn followed at a protected distance.

At the cargo-deck entrance, the brass key opened a mechanical panel hidden behind the digital lock.

Inside was a second keyhole.

Evelyn had provided only half the access.

Gregory looked at it.

“My father carries the other key.”

Daniel searched him.

Nothing.

“Where is Walter?”

Gregory lowered his eyes.

“He’ll be waiting at Lifeboat Station Four.”

“Why?”

“That’s where Aunt Caroline disappeared.”

The ship map showed Lifeboat Station Four directly above the cargo locker.

If Walter intended to repeat the “ocean solution,” he had chosen the same location.

Then the manual radio activated.

A security officer spoke through heavy interference.

“We have Walter Hale at Station Four.”

Daniel exhaled.

The voice continued.

“He has a woman with him.”

Ashlynn looked toward Gregory.

The officer named the hostage.

“Maya Torres.”

Ashlynn’s closest friend had boarded the ship without her knowledge.
