Chapter 3 - THE DAVIS FAMILY METHOD

The ship returned to Miami shortly after midnight.
Federal agents, port police, and emergency medical personnel waited at the terminal.
David left first in restraints.
He stared at me across the corridor.
“This marriage could still be saved,” he said.
I almost did not recognize the sentence as a threat.
His attorney arrived before he reached the interview room.
Harold arrived ten minutes later.
He wore the tuxedo from the wedding.
He walked past me without asking whether I was injured.
“What did you do to my son?”
“Your son attacked me.”
Harold’s face remained calm.
“David is not a violent man.”
“He repeated your advice before swinging the bat.”
“What advice?”
“That this is how you kept your wife in line.”
For the first time, his expression changed.
Not shame.
Calculation.
“David was injured and confused.”
“The emergency call recorded him.”
Harold glanced toward the agents.
Then he lowered his voice.
“You are about to make a serious mistake. Marriages have difficult private moments. Intelligent families handle them privately.”
“He brought restraints and sedatives.”
“Medical supplies.”
“He forged my signature.”
“You haven’t seen enough to understand the structure.”
That sentence stayed with investigators.
Not understand the accusation.
Understand the structure.
Harold knew there was a structure.
Agents obtained warrants covering David’s devices, communications, the suitcase, and the attempted transfer of my Axion voting authority.
The portable camera contained several test videos.
David sat alone in a room practicing his lines.
In one recording, Harold stood behind the camera.
“Do not begin angry,” he instructed. “Fear first. Comfort second. She must believe signing ends the conflict.”
David asked:
“What if she refuses completely?”
Harold answered:
“Then provoke the Marine.”
The video stopped.
A second clip continued the plan.
Harold:
Her response becomes evidence of instability.
David:
She might hurt me.
Harold:
Not badly if you maintain distance.
David:
And if she takes the bat?
Harold:
Then you become the victim.
They had underestimated what a close-range swing made possible.
They had also assumed I would feel too ashamed of my military past to explain how I defended myself.
For years, I rarely discussed service.
I did not want strangers reducing me to combat stories.
I hid the scar on my hand beneath careful manicures.
I wore soft clothing.
Avoided conflict.
Lowered my voice whenever people called me intimidating.
David interpreted my restraint as fear of exposure.
He thought he could turn my training into a weapon against me.
The documents revealed the financial motive.
Davis Meridian Capital owed more than forty-six million dollars on two failing commercial developments.
A lender had issued a deadline.
Harold needed new collateral or a major capital infusion within thirty days.
My Axion shares could support the required loan.
But the prenup blocked David from pledging or controlling them.
The postnuptial agreement changed that.
It appointed David manager of marital and separate assets during any period of medical incapacity.
It also granted Davis Meridian a right to purchase my shares at a valuation established two years earlier.
At that price, my stake would transfer for less than one-third of its current value.
Harold’s company would acquire the shares.
Use them as collateral.
Then profit if Axion sold.
I would receive a promissory note from a company already near default.
If the plan succeeded, the Davis family would rescue itself with my life’s work.
The folder also contained divorce papers.
Not for David to leave me immediately.
For after the shares transferred.
A draft declaration accused me of attacking him on the honeymoon.
It described me as dangerous, paranoid, and unable to manage stress.
David would seek a protective order.
Harold would tell Axion that I posed a reputational risk.
Then David would offer a quiet settlement in exchange for my resignation and silence.

The honeymoon was not where our marriage went wrong.
It was where they intended to finish using it.
