Chapter 3 - THE FIRST LOVE

Liam met Khloe Mercer when they were nineteen.

They attended the same university in Oregon.

Photographs from that time showed them beside rivers, at concerts, inside a cheap apartment kitchen with mismatched cabinets.

He once told me she was the person he expected to marry.

Then Khloe left.

Her father became ill, and she returned to California. Distance turned into resentment. Resentment became silence.

Liam met me four years later.

By then, he described Khloe as a youthful mistake.

I believed him.

We married after two years.

My father, Adrian Robles, had recently founded Paragon Preservation Systems, a medical-technology company developing transport units that kept donor organs viable longer.

Liam joined Paragon’s business-development division after our wedding.

He was intelligent.

Persuasive.

Excellent at making doctors and investors feel that his success had always included them.

My father promoted him.

I inherited thirty-eight percent of Paragon after Dad died unexpectedly from a cerebral hemorrhage.

The shares remained mine under the estate agreement.

Liam received no ownership automatically, but if I died while we remained married and without children, a portion would pass through my estate to him.

The current value exceeded forty-eight million dollars.

I never believed that mattered to our marriage.

Then Khloe returned.

She contacted Liam eighteen months before my hospitalization.

Her heart condition had worsened.

She needed help navigating hospital networks and insurance appeals.

Liam told me about the first call.

“She has nobody,” he said.

I encouraged him to help.

That memory became difficult to live with.

He visited Khloe during business trips.

He arranged consultations.

He used Paragon contacts to secure specialist reviews.

The messages began professionally.

Then they changed.

Khloe:

I still remember how safe I felt when you held my hand before my first surgery.

Liam:

I remember everything.

Khloe:

Does Clara know you came?

Liam:

She knows I’m helping an old friend.

Khloe:

That is not what I asked.

Weeks later:

Liam:

Sometimes I think I chose the life that made sense instead of the person who did.

Khloe:

Do not say that unless you mean it.

Liam:

I mean it every day.

They rekindled their relationship while I deteriorated.

Liam sat beside my hospital bed during the morning and called Khloe from the parking garage at night.

He kissed my forehead before leaving for “board meetings.”

Then he drove to Mercy General.

Khloe knew I was sick.

She knew I was awaiting a heart.

At first, she did not know Liam planned to manipulate an allocation.

Messages showed the moment that changed.

Liam:

Clara may receive an offer soon.

Khloe:

Then I’m happy for her.

Liam:

Her body is too weak. She may not survive surgery.

Khloe:

Did her doctors say that?

Liam:

They don’t say what everyone understands.

Khloe:

What are you asking me?

Liam:

If the right heart comes, there may be a way to direct it where it has the best chance.

Khloe:

To me?

Liam:

You have waited longer.

Khloe:

Waiting longer does not make it mine.

For three days, Khloe resisted.

Then fear took over.

Her symptoms worsened.

She was admitted twice for fluid around her lungs.

Liam told her I had decided against surgery.

That was the lie he used to make participation feel less monstrous.

He wrote:

Clara wants comfort care. She has accepted the end.

Khloe replied:

She told you that?

Liam:

She asked me to handle the paperwork because she cannot say it aloud.

Khloe:

Why would she remain active on the list?

Liam:

Her doctors keep pushing.

Khloe:

I need to hear it from her.

Liam:

You cannot ask a dying woman to comfort you.

Khloe allowed herself to believe him.

But later messages showed she learned more.

The night before the transfer, she wrote:

Melissa says Clara still wants the transplant.

Liam:

Melissa worries about liability.

Khloe:

Is Clara refusing or not?

Liam:

She will once she understands there is no future for us.

Khloe:

Us?

Liam:

You and me.

Khloe did not report him.

She did not contact me.

She asked:

Will the heart truly be compatible?

Liam answered:

I’ll make sure the records say it is.

At that moment, Khloe crossed from frightened patient into participant.

She did not design the entire plan.

She understood enough to know that my consent was being manufactured.

The morning the heart arrived, she sent Liam one final message:

Do not let her change her mind after they prepare me.

May you like

He replied:

She will not get the chance.
