Chapter 6 - THE MANSION

The mansion lost its silence next.

Police came at 7:11 p.m.

Not with sirens.

Not like television.

Two detectives.

A warrant for security footage.

A preservation order.

Questions for staff.

Victoria refused to open the breakfast room at first.

The housekeeper did.

Her name was Ana Morales.

She had poured coffee that morning with her hands shaking.

She had worked for the Vance family for eleven years.

She knew where everything was kept.

She also knew what happened to women who spoke too early.

That night, she spoke on record.

Victoria shouting.

Claire laughing.

Julian striking me.

Malcolm doing nothing.

Ana also told detectives about another woman.

Julian’s former fiancée.

Her name was Rachel Moore.

The Vances had described Rachel as unstable.

A gold digger.

A liar.

She disappeared from their social circle after breaking an engagement three years earlier.

Nora found her in Maine.

Rachel had a scar near her hairline and a settlement agreement that had terrified her into silence.

The harm clause in my prenup did not free Rachel.

But the criminal investigation, the board inquiry, and the whistleblower channels created something stronger than fear.

A crowd.

Fear works best alone.

Rachel gave a statement two days later.

Then another former employee did.

Then another.

Julian’s slap had not created the Vance family’s crimes.

It had opened the door wide enough for buried voices to walk through.

By the end of the week, Malcolm resigned as chairman pending investigation.

Julian was removed from executive leadership.

Claire Vance lost her role at the family foundation after evidence showed donor funds used for private travel.

Victoria was dropped from two charity boards.

The three contracts were suspended indefinitely.

Banks demanded new disclosures.

Creditors circled.

The mansion gates still stood.

The hedges were still clipped.

The flowers were still fresh.

But the house no longer smelled expensive to me.

May you like

It smelled trapped.

Like old curtains hiding smoke.
