Chapter 24 - THE CHILDREN INSIDE A SECOND RESCUEThe missing key had disappeared during Thomas’s medical examination.
Security footage showed an orderly removing his wrist restraint before a scan. The orderly’s face matched a hospital employee named Victor Lang.
Victor Lang had died two years earlier.
A continuity substitute had entered the hospital under his credentials.
Investigators identified the man as Samuel Wren, son of the Fort Monroe administrator whose system generated Bennett’s forged arrest order.
Samuel believed Hale’s network protected families from political changes. He had been raised to treat continuity as a civil service no elected government could be trusted to maintain.
He carried Thomas’s key to Academy South.
Hale arrived before law enforcement.
The academy contained twenty-three teenagers whose identities had been altered by Meridian. Some had living parents. Some had entered the schools through legitimate protective programs later converted into succession training.
Hale did not need to persuade every student.
He needed the institution’s lockdown system.
The copied Thomas voice announced:
“Federal extraction has been compromised. Students must enter continuity defense.”
Doors sealed.
Weapons cabinets opened.
Nora had been transferred to a separate advocate residence and was not inside. She recognized the school commands from her own training.
“They will station the youngest students near the front because officers hesitate to advance,” she told Bennett.
“How do we enter?”
“Do not enter like an enemy.”
The response team withdrew armored vehicles from the visible gate. Child advocates, parents who had been verified safely, and former students approached through video connections.
Each student received an individual channel.
No mass command.
No demand that they surrender as a group.
Some refused.
Others listened.
Hale broadcast another message.
“The government will erase your names.”
A fourteen-year-old boy named Caleb Price asked his advocate:
“Can they?”
“Not without review and your participation where the law allows.”
“Will I go back to my parents?”
“Only after safety review.”
“Do they know I’m alive?”
“Yes.”
“Do they want me?”
The advocate paused.
“Your mother does. Your father is under investigation for helping Meridian.”
The truthful answer was harder than Hale’s promise of one restored family.
Caleb opened his classroom door.
Other students followed slowly.
Hale retreated toward the underground command wing with six remaining students and Samuel Wren.
Nora requested a video call.
Bennett allowed it after the advocates agreed.
Hale appeared on the school screen.
“Daughter Two.”
“My name is Nora.”
“Thomas created that identity for temporary use.”
“My mother named me Nora before you changed it.”
“Evelyn named you for a civilian life you were never meant to live.”
“You don’t know what I’m meant to live.”
Hale showed her the six students.
“If officers enter, they will lose the only records connecting them to their real families.”
“Then release the records to their advocates.”
“They cannot protect them.”
“Neither did you.”
Hale’s face changed.
Nora had been raised to seek his approval through a father she never met. Refusing him required more courage than any school drill.
She addressed the students directly.
“He told me Alexandra knew about me and abandoned me. That was false. He told me my father chose her. My father hid both of us. Hale gives you one person to blame because anger keeps you inside.”
Samuel Wren shut off the screen.
The academy’s physical safety system had been designed by Evelyn Shaw. She provided the manual release code under cooperation terms.
“Did Hale know the code?” Bennett asked.
“Yes.”
“Then why will it help?”
“I built a second release for students.”
“Did administrators know?”
“No.”
Evelyn had hidden a safeguard without oversight.
This time, it allowed each classroom to unlock from inside after a private confirmation question.
The six students opened their doors.
Samuel Wren remained with Hale.
He had no students left to use.
Hale entered the tunnel beneath the academy.
Tactical teams followed after thermal imaging confirmed the children were clear.
At the far exit, Hale found a vehicle waiting.
The driver was Thomas Mitchell.
Not a generated face.
The real Thomas had escaped medical detention after learning Hale held the students.
He claimed he intended to intercept him.
He had told no one.
Again, Thomas had decided independent action was safer than coordinated authority.
Hale entered the passenger seat.
The vehicle accelerated into the forest.
Thomas’s hidden transmitter sent its location to Bennett.
Then Hale discovered it.
A shot sounded through the audio feed.
The vehicle crashed against a tree.
Officers reached it six minutes later.
Thomas remained behind the wheel with blood across his side.
Hale was gone.
On the passenger seat lay the founder key and a note.
YOU RAISED MY DAUGHTER. NOW DIE AS HER FATHER.
Thomas had risked himself to stop Hale.
