Chapter 1 - The Call at 2:13Richard Bennett was washing a coffee mug when his daughter called.

At first, he smiled.
Emily rarely telephoned so late, but Easter had always made her sentimental. Richard expected to hear her laughing about the elaborate decorations Margaret insisted on displaying throughout the mansion.
Instead, he heard breathing.
Shallow. Broken. Terrified.
“Emily?”
“Dad… please… come get me.”
The mug slipped from his hand.
Porcelain shattered across the kitchen floor, splashing coffee against the cabinets.
Richard did not move for one terrible second.
Then training older than his gray hair took control.
“Where are you?”
“At the house.”
“Is Ethan beside you?”
A muffled sound crossed the line.
Emily cried out.
“He hurt me again.”
The call ended.
Richard grabbed his truck keys, crossed the kitchen, and yanked open the old wooden cabinet beside the pantry. Inside rested a military field recorder, a red leather file, and the sealed envelope his late wife had ordered him never to open unless Emily called for help.
Richard took all three.
Thirty-two minutes later, he drove through the gates of Ashford Manor.
The Easter lights were still burning.
Pastel ribbons hung from stone columns. Crystal eggs glittered beneath the chandelier. A basket of painted wooden rabbits lay overturned across the cream carpet.
Emily lay beside it.
Bruises darkened one side of her face. Her shoulder was twisted beneath her body, and blood marked the corner of her mouth.
Ethan stood over her.
Margaret watched from beside the fireplace with a wine glass in one hand.
Richard entered without removing his rain-soaked coat.
“Step away from her. Now.”
Ethan turned sharply.
Margaret nearly dropped her glass.
Richard crossed the room and knelt beside Emily. He checked her breathing, pupils, shoulder, and neck before touching anything else.
Emily opened her eyes.
“Dad.”
“I’m here.”
Her fingers locked around his sleeve.
Ethan stepped forward.
“This is my house. You don’t give orders here.”
Richard rose slowly and positioned himself between Ethan and Emily.
“Wrong. Nobody leaves until I know exactly what you did.”
Margaret recovered first.
“She fell during an argument.”
Emily shook her head.
Ethan glared at her.
Richard noticed the movement immediately.
So did Emily.
She stopped speaking.
Richard looked toward the chandelier.
One crystal trembled despite the still air.
Something moved deeper inside the mansion.
A door closed somewhere beyond the western hallway.
Ethan’s confidence faltered.
Margaret placed her wine glass on the mantel.
“You have no right to search this home.”
Richard took out his phone.
“I have the right to call an ambulance.”
“There is no need for scandal.”
“My daughter is bleeding on your carpet.”
Emily whispered behind him.
“They took my phone.”
“Who?”
She looked toward Ethan.
Then toward Margaret.
Before she could answer, the mansion’s security shutters descended over every window.
The front doors locked automatically.
A calm electronic voice announced:
“Emergency privacy protocol activated.”
Richard stared at Ethan.
Ethan stared at Margaret.
Margaret’s face had gone pale.
She had not activated the system.
The chandelier crystal moved again.
Then a woman’s voice came through the hidden speakers.
“Richard, do not let them take Emily upstairs.”
Richard recognized the voice.
It belonged to Catherine Bennett.
His wife.
Emily’s mother.
