Chapter 4 - THE SCRIPT TRENT WAS GIVEN

Trent’s written statement described the cafeteria incident as a joke that escalated unexpectedly.

He claimed Jasmine had been hostile for weeks.

He claimed she threatened to destroy his family.

He claimed he never knew anyone intended to take her backpack.

The statement sounded polished.

Too polished.

Lena compared it with an email attachment found in Principal Ward’s deleted folder.

The attachment was titled STUDENT INCIDENT SUMMARY.

It had been created the night before the assault.

Paragraphs from Trent’s statement appeared word for word.

Jasmine has displayed escalating hostility.

Trent attempted harmless humor to reduce tension.

Jasmine responded with disproportionate physical violence.

The account of the cafeteria incident existed before the cafeteria incident happened.

Trent had been given a script.

Lena questioned him without Victor present. A juvenile advocate sat beside him.

“Who wrote this?”

“I did.”

“The file predates your statement.”

“I drafted notes.”

“It describes Jasmine kicking you before she kicked you.”

Trent’s breathing became uneven.

“She has a temper.”

“You expected her to react.”

“I knew she might.”

“Because the plan required it?”

He looked toward the camera in the interview room.

“Is my dad watching?”

“No.”

“Can he get this recording?”

“Not legally.”

Trent laughed bitterly.

“He gets everything.”

Lena placed a still image from the cafeteria on the table.

Trent’s friend leaned toward Jasmine’s backpack while the tray covered her face.

“Who told him to take the bag?”

Trent said nothing.

“Who told you to dump the food?”

Still nothing.

Lena changed direction.

“Did your father know Marcus Cole would enter the cafeteria?”

Trent’s eyes lifted.

That was the question he had not expected.

Marcus had been scheduled to meet Principal Ward at noon. Elaine kept him waiting in the administrative building for eighteen minutes, claiming she was handling an emergency.

She then directed him toward the cafeteria through a staff corridor.

He arrived precisely when Trent stood over Jasmine.

The timing was too exact to be accidental.

“They wanted my father to see it,” Jasmine said when Lena explained.

“Why?” Marcus asked.

“To make him react.”

Victor’s plan was larger than stealing the flash drive.

If Marcus attacked or threatened Trent, Victor could accuse the state monitor of using official power against a student whose family was under investigation.

The scholarship inquiry could be challenged as retaliation.

Jasmine’s humiliation was bait for both father and daughter.

Elaine had prepared Jasmine’s suspension form.

Victor had prepared complaints against Marcus.

Trent had been placed between them.

Marcus remembered the rage he felt when he entered.

Had Trent touched Jasmine again, Marcus was not certain he would have remained controlled.

“They studied me,” he said.

Jasmine looked at him.

“They studied us.”

The cafeteria’s audio system had recorded more than investigators first realized.

A microphone used for announcements remained active in the ceiling.

The recovered file captured Trent speaking to his friends before Jasmine entered.

“When she stands up, grab the green bag.”

One friend asked, “What if Cole gets here early?”

Trent answered:

“That’s the point.”

Then another voice entered.

Principal Ward.

“Do not do anything until the east doors open.”

Elaine claimed the voice was not hers.

A forensic comparison confirmed it was.

The principal had been inside the cafeteria before Marcus arrived.

She watched students gather.

She watched Trent take position.

Then she left through the staff exit so she could later claim she arrived after the disturbance.

Victor called a press conference that evening.

He presented Trent as a frightened teenager attacked by the daughter of a powerful state official.

He released only the video of Jasmine’s kick.

The food dumping had been removed.

The stolen backpack had been omitted.

Marcus refused to respond publicly.

Jasmine wanted to.

“They’re making me look violent.”

“They are,” he said.

“So we show the full video.”

“Lena controls the evidence release.”

“You always want procedures to save us.”

“No. I want the complete evidence to survive court.”

Jasmine stared at him.

“And while we wait?”

“We tell the truth without interfering with the investigation.”

She released a short statement through the student newspaper:

Trent poured an entire lunch tray over me while another student took my backpack. I defended myself and prevented the theft of evidence. The full recording should be preserved and reviewed.

She included no accusation about scholarship fraud.

She let the records speak when investigators were ready.

Minutes later, North17 sent another message.

TRENT IS LYING BECAUSE HIS FATHER KNOWS WHO SENT YOU THE FIRST LEDGER.

Jasmine typed:

Who are you?

The reply arrived immediately.
