Chapter 11 - THE RING FROM A CLOSED ESTATE
Michael Ashford died during a sailing accident off Maine.
His body was recovered without his wedding band, watch, or family signet ring. Investigators assumed the items had been lost in the ocean.
Jonathan had accepted that explanation.
Now Emily’s memory placed the ring inside the gala ballroom.
Nora reopened the estate inventory.
After Michael’s death, his belongings passed to the Ashford family trust. Cross had signed the medical identification report before the funeral.
The same doctor had certified both Michael and Emily dead.
Jonathan felt a new horror.
“Are you saying Cross killed my brother?”
“No,” Nora said. “We are saying he had access to Michael’s effects after death.”
The morgue log showed Cross collected a sealed personal-property envelope on Jonathan’s behalf.
Jonathan never authorized it.
Cross claimed at the time that the envelope contained damaged medical documents and was destroyed.
No one verified the claim.
The ring may have been inside.
Why give it to another person at the gala?
To implicate the family?
To signal trust?
Or because the accomplice had long-standing access to the Ashfords?
Foundation photographs showed dozens of hands near Emily’s table, but no clear view of the ring.
Grace requested original high-resolution files from every event photographer.
One image captured a person placing a cider glass on a side table.
The face remained outside the frame.
The hand wore a gold signet ring.
A medical badge hung near the wrist.
The badge belonged to Leah Morgan.
But Leah had no ring when police rescued her.
She insisted Cross gave it to her before the gala.
“He told me Jonathan wanted staff to wear family symbols for the memorial event.”
“Did you know it belonged to Michael?” Nora asked.
“No.”
Cross used the ring to make Leah appear connected to the family and to confuse any witness who saw only her hand.
Emily’s memory had been accurate.
The ring did not prove a secret Ashford accomplice.
It proved Cross planned layers of misdirection.
Leah admitted placing the glass on the table. She still maintained she believed it contained a mild anti-anxiety medication.
The original pharmacy logs and Cross’s recording supported her.
She would face charges for falsifying records and administering medication without consent, but prosecutors considered her coercion and cooperation.
The ring remained missing.
Cross had removed it from Leah while holding her captive.
Nora believed he carried it because it could unlock something.
The Ashford crest was decorative, but the ring’s interior contained a tiny engraved code.
Jonathan’s father once used the codes as recovery keys for family vault records.
Michael’s code could access an inactive estate archive.
Grace checked the system.
Someone had used the code three hours after Emily collapsed.
The archive stored historical foundation agreements, including Isabel’s original appointment of Cross.
A document had been removed.
Its index title read:
Termination authority—medical trustee.
Isabel had included a confidential mechanism allowing Emily, after age eight, to remove Cross from the foundation if she believed he violated its mission.
Emily had turned eight two months earlier.
She did not need Jonathan’s approval.
Her written statement and a review by Grace would have ended Cross’s control immediately.
Cross knew.
Emily had likely discovered the clause alongside the missing accounts.
The poison stopped her hours before she could use it.
The archive logs also showed a second access after Cross fled.
Someone entered using Jonathan’s current family code.
Jonathan’s ring remained on his finger.
Grace’s code was different.
Emily had no ring.
Nora examined the access method.
The system accepted a biometric scan paired with Jonathan’s code.
Someone had copied his fingerprint.
Jonathan remembered Dr. Cross pressing his hand onto a medical consent tablet during a routine appointment weeks earlier.
Cross had harvested it.
He could now open any older family archive designed before modern security standards.
One archive remained connected to the cathedral crypt where Isabel’s original foundation charter was stored.
Cross’s next destination became obvious.
