Chapter 2 - MONTHS OF AUDIO

Hospital security separated Grant and Eleanor before police entered Claire’s room.
Grant demanded to stay beside his wife. He claimed she suffered from prenatal depression and often recorded conversations without context.
Eleanor said nothing.
She watched the cracked phone as Officer Rachel Cole placed it inside an evidence bag.
Detective Lena Brooks arrived within twenty minutes. She asked Claire whether she felt safe answering questions.
“No,” Claire said.
Lena glanced toward the guarded door.
“They cannot enter.”
“That doesn’t mean I feel safe.”
The honesty seemed to matter.
Lena pulled a chair closer but remained far enough away not to crowd her.
“What happened at the house?”
Claire told her.
Not everything at once. The memories came in fragments: Grant tying her wrists, Eleanor sharpening the tool, the first blow, the blood, the invented fall.
Dr. Hayes documented every visible injury. Rope burns circled both wrists. Bruises at different stages of healing covered Claire’s ribs, shoulders, thighs, and lower back.
Several could not have occurred that morning.
“The injuries show a pattern,” he told Lena.
Grant’s staircase—no, porch—story failed almost immediately.
The cracked phone contained forty-seven recordings.
The oldest was five months old.
In it, Grant accused Claire of embarrassing him because an early ultrasound technician would not confirm the baby’s sex. Eleanor told him that daughters drained family money while sons preserved it.
Another recording captured Claire asking for access to the joint bank account.
Grant answered:
“You don’t need money. You need permission.”
A later file included the sound of a door locking.
Claire’s voice asked to visit a doctor.
Eleanor replied:
“You already had the test. It’s another girl. Nothing is wrong with you except ingratitude.”
The private prenatal result appeared repeatedly.
Claire had never seen the original laboratory document. Eleanor simply brought home a printed page and announced that the baby was female.
Grant believed her.
Or pretended to.
Lena asked why Claire had not called police earlier.
“I tried.”
“What happened?”
“Grant took my phone. He said the sheriff played cards with his supervisor.”
“Was that true?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did you contact anyone else?”
Claire looked toward the blanket.
“My sister died four years ago. My parents are gone. Grant moved us to Texas after the wedding. I wasn’t allowed to work after the pregnancy began.”
The rental house stood twelve miles outside town. Grant controlled the vehicle, mail, accounts, and internet. Eleanor moved into the spare bedroom after Claire’s second miscarriage.
“She said I needed supervision.”
Lena listened without interruption.
Outside, Grant’s voice rose.
“She attacked my mother!”
Officer Cole responded firmly.
“You are being detained during an active investigation.”
Eleanor finally spoke.
“Grant, stop talking.”
Her calm carried authority.
Grant obeyed.
Lena noticed.
“So she controls him?”
Claire considered the question.
“Only when it benefits her.”
The forensic nurse brought in Claire’s torn dress and photographed the blood along the hem. Fibers embedded near the wrists matched the thick rope officers later recovered from the porch.
The medical evidence showed placental trauma caused by direct force.
There was no plausible fall consistent with the pattern.
Grant was arrested for aggravated assault and unlawful restraint.
Eleanor was arrested for aiding the assault and failing to seek emergency care.
As officers prepared to remove them, Grant looked through the glass at Claire.
“You destroyed this family.”
Claire did not answer.
Eleanor paused beside him.
“You still don’t understand what she’s done,” she said softly.
Then she looked directly at Claire’s abdomen.
“The boy changes everything.”
Dr. Hayes heard her.
So did Lena.
The detective stepped closer.
“What boy?”
Eleanor smiled faintly.
May you like
“The one who was never supposed to be confirmed.”
👉 The abuse began as Grant’s punishment for having another daughter, but Eleanor’s own words revealed that the false sex result had been part of a deliberate plan.
