Chapter 24 - Clara meets Vivian again

Neutral office.
One therapist.
Clara.
Vivian.
I waited elsewhere.
Clara told me later.
Vivian stood when she entered.
Then stopped.
“May I hug you?”
“No.”
“Okay.”
Good.
They sat.
Clara’s first question:
“Did you ever think I was a good mother?”
Vivian took too long.
“Sometimes.”
Painful.
Honest.
“Did you think Daniel should leave me?”
“At times.”
“Because I was poor?”
“Partly.”
Clara said that answer hurt less than denial.
Then:
“Did you think Lily should live with you?”
“Temporarily, if you went into treatment.”
“I was never going into treatment.”
“I know now.”
“You searched it.”
“Yes.”
“You photographed me.”
“Yes.”
“You filed CPS.”
“Yes.”
“Were you trying to get Lily?”
Vivian said:
“I was trying to make Daniel rely on me.”
That was better than a custody fantasy.
Then Clara asked:
“Why did you keep eating?”
The dinner.
Vivian cried.
“I thought if I got up and helped you, I would have to admit I had gone too far.”
Clara stared.
That was perhaps the ugliest truth of all.
Not confusion.
Not ignorance.
Pride.
Vivian continued:
“You were breathing. I told myself you were sleeping.”
“Did you believe it?”
“Not completely.”
Clara stood.
Meeting lasted twenty-eight minutes.
At the door Vivian said:
“I am sorry.”
Clara answered:
“I know.”
Not:
I forgive you.
Not:
It’s okay.
Just acknowledgment.
Outside, Clara’s hands shook.
“So?”
I asked.
“I still shake.”
She laughed weakly.
“Less.”
Then:
“Do you want to see her?”
“I don’t know.”
Good.
No immediate family reunion.
Then Vivian’s probation officer filed routine progress report recommending step-down in supervision after sustained compliance.
No contact with us remained unless we consented.
We consented to none.
Vivian accepted.
Then she sold Northwick Residential Advisory and dissolved it? There was no real business beyond consulting. She closed the LLC after tax obligations.
HomeHarbor dissolved through Elaine’s process.
No entity left.
Mercer Family Administration’s new administrator sent annual vendor-control report.
Reforms working.
No recurrence.
Then I made a decision I had delayed.
I stepped off Mercer Family Administration’s board.
Not because of scandal.
Because I did not need another family member to replace Vivian at the center.
Independent directors.
Elise stayed as shareholder representative.
Professional governance.
I kept ownership.
No need to abandon lawful property.
Just fewer overlapping roles.
Clara said:
“Your mom would hate that.”
“Exactly why it’s healthy.”
We laughed.
Then Lily took her first steps between us.
No camera.
We missed recording it.
Clara started to reach for her phone.
Then stopped.
“Let’s just see it.”
May you like
We did.
Some moments do not need evidence.
