Chapter 9 - the ambulance that came at midnight
Hospital security blocked the transport crew at the elevator.
The two attendants wore legitimate state licenses. They believed they had been dispatched to move Rebecca under federal protection.
Their company received the order from Northcrest Clinical Services.
Neither knew the authorization was fraudulent.
Inside the ambulance, police found restraints, sedatives, and a destination route that did not lead to Northcrest Rehabilitation Center.
It ended at a private airfield.
A charter plane waited with a flight plan to Belize.
Rebecca was not being transferred.
She was being removed from the country.
The forged order used real court language and an authentic digital seal copied from another case. Someone had access to federal filing systems.
Miriam requested immediate protective custody under the U.S. Marshals Service.
Rebecca resisted the word custody.
“I have spent days with men deciding where my body goes.”
The marshal assigned to her, Caroline Webb, answered directly.
“You choose the location. My job is to keep others from changing it.”
Rebecca chose a private rehabilitation floor inside another hospital under a false patient number.
Only Megan, Dr. Collins, Miriam, Bennett, Natalie, and the marshals knew.
Megan remained suspended from nursing duties but continued assisting investigators.
Rebecca asked that she be allowed one supervised visit.
“Why?” Miriam asked.
“Because Adrian used her identity. I need to know whether he also used her loyalty.”
Megan entered without a badge.
Rebecca lay with both casts elevated, bruises fading slowly.
“You should hate me,” Megan said.
“I don’t know you well enough.”
The answer was not cruel.
It was accurate.
Megan admitted she had used Rebecca as bait when Caleb entered. She believed the hidden alarm would allow staff to intervene before violence.
“I wanted my father on camera authorizing the access.”
“You gambled with my body.”
“Yes.”
“Why save me afterward?”
“Because the plan failed. Because I am a nurse. Because you were bleeding. Because I could not watch him destroy another Hale woman.”
Several motives could coexist.
Rebecca did not forgive her.
She did not ask her to leave.
Megan provided a list of people Adrian trusted: Rachel Gray, Officer Nolan, a Northcrest attorney named Philip Kane, and hospital technology director Mason Pike.
Mason Pike maintained the room cameras and medication network.
Police found his apartment empty.
His computer contained live feeds from Rebecca’s previous hospital room, Hale Adaptive headquarters, and Caleb’s house.
One feed remained active.
Caleb sat inside his mother’s living room under electronic monitoring.
Vivian was in police custody.
He appeared alone.
Then Adrian Voss entered through the rear door.
Caleb stood.
“You said Rebecca would be gone by now.”
Adrian answered, “Your wife survived because you acted emotionally.”
“She survived the crash because Victor used the wrong speed.”
“She survived the hospital because Megan opened the door.”
Caleb looked toward a hidden camera he did not know existed.
“What happens now?”
“Northcrest removes her through the courts.”
“She has Sarah’s recording.”
“Then Sarah’s daughter dies before it becomes admissible.”
Rebecca watched the live feed beside Bennett.
The detective signaled officers to move on the house.
Adrian continued.
“Rachel Gray is preparing the replacement samples.”
“What samples?”
“To show Rebecca was drugging herself.”
Caleb looked frightened.
“You’re framing her after everything is public?”
“Public attention changes timing, not method.”
Adrian placed a phone on the table.
A video showed Rebecca inside the secret rehabilitation room.
The current room.
Someone had already found her new location.
Megan looked around.
The only camera was a hospital-issued rehabilitation monitor.
Mason Pike had infiltrated the second hospital’s network too.
Webb ordered an evacuation.
Before they moved Rebecca, Caleb spoke on-screen.
“I want immunity.”
Adrian laughed.
“You want Rebecca to believe you were recruited instead of willing.”
“I have recordings.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
“What recordings?”
“Every call since you first mentioned Sarah.”
Caleb had collected evidence against his handler, just as he collected evidence against Rebecca.
He named a storage locker beneath Mercer Station.
Adrian drew a gun.
Police breached the house.
The live feed exploded into movement.
Caleb dove behind the sofa.
Adrian fired toward the rear door and escaped through a glass patio panel before officers secured the room.
Caleb was taken back into custody.
He immediately offered the storage key.
The locker contained years of audio.
Caleb and Adrian discussing medication.
Victor and Caleb discussing the brake patch.
Dr. Gray coaching Caleb on symptoms to document.
Vivian warning Caleb that Rebecca had opened the blue file.
One recording came from the night before the crash.
Adrian said:
“After the hospital transfer, the company belongs to Northcrest.”
Caleb asked:
“And Rebecca?”
“Once she signs, she becomes a long-term patient.”
“She’ll recover.”
“Not from what Rachel gives her.”
Caleb knew Northcrest planned to keep Rebecca drugged indefinitely.
He participated anyway.
His cooperation might reduce his sentence.
It would not make him a rescuer.
The final recording on the device contained Sarah Hale’s voice.
Caleb had secretly recorded Adrian playing an older file.
Sarah said:
“Rebecca must never know who funded Hale Adaptive at the beginning.”
Adrian answered someone off-microphone:
“If she learns the patents were purchased with Northcrest money, the trust collapses.”
Miriam looked at Rebecca.
Sarah’s company history stated she founded Hale Adaptive with a personal injury settlement.
If Northcrest had financed it secretly, they might claim ownership.
Rebecca’s fight was no longer only against theft.
