Chapter 1

“My Son Beat Me in the Mansion I Still Owned.”

Ryan’s fist hit my face so hard the room disappeared for half a second.

Not from the pain.

I had survived pain before.

Broken contracts.

Failed deals.

A wife buried too young.

Forty years of business partners smiling with knives behind their backs.

But nothing had ever felt like my own son’s knuckles splitting my lip in front of seventy guests.

My name is Leonard Mercer.

I was sixty-eight years old the night my son decided I was too old to stand inside my own house.

The party had started as a birthday dinner.

His birthday.

Thirty-two years old.

Beige suit.

Open white shirt.

Dark curls perfectly styled.

A charming smile that had learned too much from men who mistake inheritance for achievement.

I had brought him a gift.

A restored vintage watch.

The same model my father wore when he opened his first construction office in Pasadena.

I had spent six months finding it.

Three months restoring it.

And one foolish hour believing Ryan might understand what it meant.

He did not.

He opened the brown box, looked at the watch, and laughed.

“Is this supposed to be sentimental?”

Vanessa, his wife, sat on the cream sofa in a gold satin dress, swirling wine in her glass.

She smiled like cruelty had been catered with the champagne.

“Maybe it’s symbolic,” she said.

“Time running out.”

The guests laughed weakly.

Rich people often laugh before they decide whether something is safe to witness.

Ryan tossed the watch box onto the marble floor.

It struck the edge of the coffee table and crushed one corner.

Something inside me cracked with it.

“Pick it up,” I said.

Ryan turned slowly.

“What?”

I looked at my son.

“Pick it up.”

His face changed.

The party sound faded.

Glasses paused halfway to mouths.

Vanessa’s smile grew.

Ryan stepped toward me.

“This house isn’t yours anymore.”

Then he punched me.

My head snapped sideways.

Blood filled my mouth.

A woman gasped.

Someone whispered my name.

I caught myself on the back of a chair instead of falling.

Ryan stood over me, breathing hard, fists clenched.

For one terrible second, I saw the boy he had been.

Then I saw the man he had chosen to become.

I wiped blood from my mouth.

Straightened my navy blazer.

And looked at him calmly.

“You should be very careful with that sentence.”

Ryan grabbed my shoulder.

“Get out of my home.”

I removed his hand with one firm movement.

Then I bent down, picked up the crushed watch box, closed it carefully, and tucked it beneath my arm.

Vanessa’s smile finally faded.

I walked toward the front door.

At the dark glass, I saw Ryan’s reflection behind me.

Still angry.

Still arrogant.

Still certain.

I paused without turning.

“Enjoy tonight, son.”

My voice was quiet.

“It’s the last one you’ll understand.”

Then I stepped into the Beverly Hills darkness.
