Chapter 8 - THE ASSISTAN THer name was Lauren Pierce.

Forty-two.

Worked for Fairmont Family Administration for eleven years.

She cried before deposition began.

Not because Naomi intimidated her.

Because Millicent had fired her that morning.

Lauren hired her own attorney.

Good.

Then testified.

“Did you create childcare calendars for Millicent Fairmont?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“She asked me to reconstruct dates.”

“From what?”

“Her calendar. School emails. Driver logs.”

“Did you verify overnight stays?”

“No.”

“What were you told?”

“If Mrs. Fairmont handled any Silas-related task that day, mark it blue.”

My stomach dropped.

Blue had been presented in court as:

Silas with Grandma.

Lauren continued.

“Sometimes she asked me to mark multiple consecutive days.”

“Why?”

“She said caregiving is continuous when a child depends on someone.”

That is not how nights work.

“Did you know the calendar would be used in court?”

“Not at first.”

“When did you learn?”

“Two months ago.”

“What did you do?”

“I asked whether the labels should be changed.”

“Response?”

“She said Diane would understand context.”

Diane, the first lawyer, had not.

She received the calendar labeled:

OVERNIGHT / PRIMARY CARE SUMMARY.

Millicent changed the title before giving it to counsel.

Lauren had the earlier file.

Activity-support calendar.

Not same thing.

That was major.

Then Naomi asked about Silas’s belongings.

Lauren looked down.

“I ordered the garbage bags.”

I nearly laughed from disbelief.

“When?”

“Day before the playground.”

“Why?”

“Mrs. Fairmont said she was helping Gideon reorganize the boy’s room because of a custody transition.”

“Did you believe Gideon agreed?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“She showed me an email.”

“What email?”

Lauren’s attorney produced it.

From my supposed address.

Gideon Fairmont:

Mom, go ahead and take Silas’s things Friday. He’ll be better off settled with you before court makes everything worse.

I never sent it.

The sending domain looked right at first glance.

gfairmont.com.

My real business email:

gfairmontsystems.com.

Fake domain.

Registered three months earlier.

Registrant privacy protected.

Payment?

Fairmont Family Administration corporate card.

My mother’s office had created an email address designed to look like mine.

This escalated beyond family court.

Potential fraud.

Naomi referred it to investigators.

No instant arrest.

Preserve evidence.

Then Lauren revealed something else.

Millicent ordered her to create a “residence packet.”

Photos of Silas’s guest room at Millicent’s home.

Toothbrush.

Clothes.

School books.

Medical supplies.

Some real.

Then after yesterday, his entire bedroom would arrive.

Photographs scheduled for that evening.

Timestamped after the move.

Then the emergency hearing Monday.

Manufactured current residence.

Silas’s instinct to point at the trunk had disrupted it.

So had Keira’s video.

So had me arriving early.

Why was I early?

My site meeting ended twenty-two minutes ahead of schedule.

No secret hero timing.

A steel-delivery truck arrived before lunch, solving the problem we expected to argue about until three.

I drove to the playground because I wanted coffee with Silas and my mother.

Chance.

The whole scheme almost worked because ordinary life usually runs on schedule.

Then Lauren’s attorney said:

“My client has one more document.”

A moving invoice.

Destination:

Millicent’s home.

Pickup:

My address.

Scheduled for the following morning.

Items listed:

Child bed.

Desk.

Dresser.

Bookshelf.

Boxes.

My mother planned not just to take Silas’s belongings.

She planned to remove the furniture too.

The bedroom itself.

Naomi asked:

“Who authorized entry?”

Lauren looked at me.

“Mrs. Fairmont said she still had a key.”

Then:

“She also told us not to worry because after Monday, Gideon wouldn’t be allowed back into the room without supervision.”

My skin went cold.

My mother’s plan depended on more than becoming Silas’s caregiver.

She expected a court to restrict me.

For what?

The answer came in the next filing.

Millicent amended her petition.

New allegation:

I had become physically violent toward her at the playground.

She attached a photograph of herself in the mud.

No Keira video.

No context.

And requested:

Supervised parenting time for Gideon pending anger evaluation.

My one shove had just become the final piece of the story she had been building for fourteen months.
