PART 2.

I stared at my mother without blinking. “Tell me exactly how Emily died.”

She folded her arms. “The doctors said there were complications during labor. She lost too much blood.”

“That’s strange,” I replied quietly. “Then why is there no hospital bracelet? No medical records. No death certificate?”

For the first time, Caleb shifted uneasily. Mother’s lips tightened, but she answered, “Everything happened so fast.”

The baby cried upstairs again.

I walked toward the staircase.

“You’re not going up there,” Mother snapped, stepping in front of me.

“She was my wife,” I said. “That’s my son.”

She hesitated for half a second.

That was all I needed.

I moved past her and climbed the stairs two at a time.

Inside the nursery, my son lay in a crib, tiny but healthy. He stopped crying the moment I picked him up. Around his wrist was a hospital identification band. I photographed it immediately.

Someone had forgotten to remove the evidence.

Back downstairs, Mother’s face had lost every trace of color.

“You had no right,” she whispered.

“No,” I answered. “You had no right.”

While rocking my son with one arm, I secretly inserted the memory card into my encrypted military phone.

A single video appeared.

Timestamp: Thirty-six hours earlier.

Emily’s frightened face filled the screen.

“If you’re watching this, Daniel,” she whispered, “it means I didn’t make it.”

My heart nearly stopped.

“I’m not afraid of childbirth,” she continued. “I’m afraid of your mother.”

Behind me, I heard a glass shatter.

Caleb had dropped his whiskey.

The recording continued.

“She’s been changing my medication... and she keeps saying the baby belongs to this family, not to us.”

Mother suddenly lunged toward me.

“Delete it!”

I stepped aside instinctively, years of military training taking over. She stumbled to the floor while Caleb froze in horror.

Then my phone vibrated.

I slowly looked up.

Mother wasn't frightened anymore.

She was smiling.

And that terrified me far more than anything I had seen on the battlefield.
