Chapter 8

Emily stood alone in the aisle.

White gown.

Perfect veil.

Bouquet trembling in her hands.

For twenty-two years, beauty had protected her from consequences.

But beauty cannot answer a question.

Not the kind Daniel asked.

“Did you know Sarah was seated in the back?”

Emily’s lips parted.

She looked at Linda.

Then Mark.

Then me.

“Yes.”

The word was small.

But it broke something large.

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Did you ask for that?”

Silence.

Margaret squeezed my hand.

Emily whispered, “I didn’t want people staring.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“At Sarah?”

“At me.”

That answer was uglier because it was honest.

Emily was not worried that I would be humiliated.

She was worried my scars would redirect the room away from her.

Daniel stepped back.

He looked toward the altar.

Then the minister.

Then his mother.

“Give us a moment.”

The minister nodded, pale and shaken.

Emily reached for Daniel’s hand.

He did not take it.

“Daniel, please.”

He looked at her.

“I need to know who I’m marrying.”

“You do know me.”

“No.”

His voice stayed quiet.

“That is the problem.”

My mother moved toward them.

“Daniel, this is family history.”

Margaret turned so sharply my mother stopped.

“No, Linda.”

“This is family cowardice.”

My father said, “That is enough.”

Margaret faced him.

“You allowed your burned child to be hidden at the back of her sister’s wedding.”

“No father gets to decide when enough truth has been spoken.”

The words hit him visibly.

He sat down.

For the first time in my life, Mark Bennett looked older than his age.

Emily whispered, “Sarah, say something.”

I looked at her.

“What do you want me to say?”

“That I didn’t mean it.”

I thought of the back pew.

The gloves.

The lowered eyes.

The years of careful clothing and careful silence.

“You meant it.”

She started sobbing.

I did not hate her then.

That surprised me.

I saw her clearly.

Small.

Afraid.

Selfish.

Loved badly by parents who protected her from guilt by sacrificing me.

But clarity is not forgiveness.

May you like

It is only the place forgiveness might one day begin.
