Chapter 7 - THE NIGHTS WITHOUT SLEEP
Emily’s exhaustion was not accidental.
The home-security logs showed repeated activity outside her bedroom between two and five in the morning.
Margaret adjusted the thermostat to fifty-eight degrees.
She triggered brief smoke-alarm tests.
She called Emily’s phone from blocked numbers and hung up.
She entered the kitchen and dropped pans, then told Ryan the sounds had come from Emily wandering through the house.
On nights before important meetings, the disruptions increased.
Margaret had been depriving Emily of sleep while documenting the consequences.
At work, Ryan noticed Emily forgetting small details.
He urged her to take leave.
Margaret supplied the explanation: ambition, grief, and an inability to accept help.
The real cause lived across the hallway from them.
Emily watched the security timeline with Grace.
“Ryan slept through all of this?”
“Some nights he was traveling. Other nights Margaret triggered sounds near your side of the house.”
Emily remembered waking to Margaret standing in the doorway.
The older woman would smile and ask why she was restless.
Then she would tell Ryan that Emily had frightened her by appearing confused.
One morning, Emily found the front door open.
Margaret later claimed she must have left it that way during a sleepwalking episode.
Security logs now showed Margaret unlocking it at 3:14 a.m.
The private physician added supposed sleepwalking to the medical report.
The campaign had been built detail by detail.
Mara questioned Margaret again.
“You intentionally woke Emily before documenting her exhaustion.”
“I live in that house. I am allowed to move around.”
“You lowered the temperature in her bedroom.”
“She complained about heat.”
“You triggered the alarms.”
“The system malfunctioned.”
“You opened the front door and blamed her.”
“I do not recall.”
Mara placed the automation records before her.
Margaret stopped answering.
Ryan reviewed the same evidence separately.
He remembered telling Emily that his mother felt unsafe around her.
He remembered recommending sleeping medication.
He remembered canceling Emily’s early-morning driver after Margaret said rest would be healthier.
Each attempt to help had relied on Margaret’s story.
“I should have asked why it was always Emily who had to change,” he told Grace.
“Yes,” she said.
He looked at her.
“You are not going to tell me I was manipulated?”
“You were. You also benefited from not challenging it.”
Ryan did not argue.
The board’s audit uncovered one more use of the sleep campaign.
Ryan had approved three major vendor contracts while Emily was too exhausted to attend meetings. Two involved Mason House-linked businesses.
Margaret timed the worst nights before those approvals.
She understood enough about the company calendar to create absence exactly when she needed it.
How?
Ryan had shared his schedule with her.
He sent board packets to a printer inside the house because Margaret offered to organize them.
She copied everything.
Emily’s office was not breached through sophisticated hacking.
It was breached through family convenience.
The discovery made the conspiracy smaller and more painful.
Margaret had not defeated their security.
Ryan had carried the documents home.
He had placed them within her reach.
The company suspended him indefinitely as chief financial officer.
Prosecutors warned that approving payments after discovering the conflict could expose him to criminal liability.
Ryan agreed to cooperate fully.
He sold his personal investment account and placed the proceeds into a restitution fund before any court required it.
Emily heard about the payment through Grace.
It did not repair the marriage.
It showed he had stopped waiting for forgiveness before accepting consequences.
That evening, Emily returned to the house with a contractor to remove the soaked mattress.
Inside the wooden bed frame, they found a small audio recorder taped beneath the slats.
Margaret had installed it months earlier.
Most files captured Emily sleeping, crying, or speaking privately on the phone.
One recording captured a conversation Emily had with Grace about divorcing Ryan if the missing money led back to him.
Margaret had heard it.
