PART 2

Chief Daniel Ruiz took one slow step forward.

Every officer in the room immediately noticed the change in his expression.

He looked from my bruised face to the crying baby in Margaret's arms.

Then he looked directly at me again.

"Your Honor," he said quietly, "are you asking for assistance?"

Margaret laughed loudly.

"Judge? This lazy woman hasn't worked a single day since marrying my son."

No one answered her.

Daniel removed his cap and spoke into his radio.

"Cancel the restraint order. Medical staff to Suite 801 immediately."

The officers instantly lowered their hands.

Margaret's confident smile disappeared.

"What are you doing?" she demanded.

"She's the unstable one!"

Daniel's voice became cold.

"Ma'am, place the baby back into the bassinet."

"You have no authority over me," Margaret snapped.

"I'm his grandmother."

One of the nurses carefully stepped forward.

"Please hand me the infant."

Margaret backed away instead.

"I have every right to take my grandson."

The room fell into complete silence.

Daniel finally spoke again.

"No, you do not."

At that moment, the hospital director hurried into the suite with two senior physicians close behind.

The moment they saw me, they stopped.

"Judge Carter," the director said with visible concern.

"Are you injured?"

I slowly nodded toward my split lip.

"I was assaulted while recovering from emergency surgery."

Every face in the room hardened.

Margaret suddenly looked around as though realizing she had walked into a situation she no longer controlled.

"This is ridiculous," she stammered.

"My son will fix this."

Before anyone could respond, the suite door opened once more.

Heavy footsteps echoed across the polished floor.

My husband rushed inside, still wearing his business suit.

He looked first at me.

Then at his mother holding Noah.

Then at the line of security officers standing between them.

Finally, his eyes met Chief Ruiz's.

"What happened here?" he asked.

No one answered immediately.

Instead, Daniel slowly held up the hospital security tablet.

"The cameras recorded everything from the moment your mother entered this room."

Brandon's face instantly lost all color.

He knew exactly what those recordings would reveal.
