Chapter 5

By sunset detectives arrived.

Sophia returned home just as officers stepped through the front door.

She smiled confidently.

"Andrew, finally."

Then she saw the uniforms.

"What is this?"

Andrew said nothing.

One detective calmly informed her she was under investigation for child abuse and coercive control.

Sophia laughed.

"She has no proof."

Andrew placed the laptop on the dining table.

"Actually..."

"...she does."

He pressed Play.

The color drained from Sophia's face.

Months later...

Sophia accepted a plea agreement.

She received prison time and was permanently prohibited from contacting Valerie.

The mansion became quiet again.

For the first time in years...

Quiet felt safe.

One rainy afternoon Valerie asked,

"Daddy?"

"Yes?"

"Can we visit Mommy?"

They drove together to Emma's cemetery.

Valerie carried fresh white lilies.

She carefully knelt beside the headstone.

"I remembered you," she whispered.

"No one made me forget."

Andrew stood behind her, unable to speak.

Before leaving, Valerie reached into her backpack.

She unfolded the tiny napkin that had once been hidden inside her school blazer.

Then she smiled.

"I don't need this anymore."

She tucked it beneath the flowers.

As they walked back toward the car, Andrew slipped his hand into his daughter's.

She squeezed it tightly.

"Daddy?"

"Yeah, sweetheart?"

"You came home early."

"I did."

"I'm glad your meeting was canceled."

Andrew looked at his little girl.

Then toward the clouds breaking apart above the cemetery.

"So am I."

Because he finally understood the truth that would haunt him for the rest of his life.

The straight A's had never been a sign his daughter was thriving.

They had been the survival strategy of a frightened little girl trying desperately to become so perfect...

...that no one would hit her again.

And from that day forward, Andrew made only one promise he never broke.

No meeting.

No investment.

May you like

No fortune.

Would ever matter more than coming home in time to protect his daughter.
