Chapter 1 - the secret behind the bathroom door

Hannah Reed knew something was wrong when Sophie stopped asking for bedtime baths.

Her five-year-old daughter had always loved them.

She used to fill the old mint-green tub with plastic boats, sing nonsense songs into a paper cup, and complain when Hannah finally drained the water.

Then, three weeks earlier, everything changed.

Whenever Mark announced bath time, Sophie became quiet.

She carried her stuffed rabbit upstairs like a shield.

And afterward, she came back with wet hair, pink cheeks, and the same answer whenever Hannah asked why she had been crying.

“I’m tired.”

That night, Hannah knelt beside Sophie’s bed.

The room was dim except for the rabbit-shaped night-light glowing near the dresser.

Sophie clutched her stuffed rabbit against her chest.

Hannah brushed damp hair from her daughter’s forehead.

“What do you and Daddy do in there for such a long time?”

Sophie’s lip trembled.

Hannah’s stomach tightened.

“Sophie?”

Tears suddenly filled the little girl’s eyes.

“Daddy says the games in the bathroom have to stay secret.”

Hannah stopped breathing.

“What games?”

Sophie turned her face into the stuffed rabbit.

“I’m not supposed to say.”

Hannah wanted to wake Mark immediately.

Demand answers.

Tear the bathroom apart if necessary.

Instead, something colder than panic took control.

She kissed Sophie goodnight.

Then waited.

The following evening Mark announced bath time at seven fifteen.

Hannah pretended to be answering emails downstairs.

Mark took Sophie upstairs.

Ten minutes later, Hannah heard water running.

Then silence.

Too much silence.

She removed her shoes and walked barefoot down the hallway.

The bathroom door was slightly open.

Warm light spilled across the floor.

Hannah approached.

Through the narrow opening, she saw Sophie sitting on the edge of the old mint-green tub.

Her wet hair clung to her cheeks.

A pink towel wrapped her small body.

She hugged her teddy bear so tightly its head was crushed against her chest.

She was crying.

Mark knelt beside her.

On the pink-and-white tile floor sat a paper cup.

Beside it was a brown bottle Hannah had never seen.

Mark held a kitchen timer.

“We’re nearly finished,” he said.

Sophie shook her head.

“I don’t want the game.”

Mark lowered his voice.

“You promised Daddy you’d be brave.”

Hannah’s fear became horror.

She stepped backward.

Her hand struck the hallway wall.

Mark did not hear.

He was watching the timer.

Hannah pulled out her phone.

Her fingers shook so badly she nearly dropped it.

The emergency dispatcher answered.

Hannah whispered:

“I need the police. Right now.”

“What is the address?”

She gave it.

“What is happening?”

Hannah stared through the opening.

“My husband is in the bathroom with our five-year-old daughter. She’s crying. He has some kind of bottle and a timer. She told me he makes her keep what they do in there secret.”

The dispatcher’s voice became calm and precise.

“Do not confront him if you feel your daughter may be in danger. Officers are on the way.”

Hannah remained frozen.

Then Sophie whimpered:

“My skin hurts.”

Mark reached for the brown bottle.

Hannah could not remain hidden another second.

She pushed the door open.

“Mark.”

He spun around.

His face changed when he saw her phone.

“Hannah?”

“Step away from Sophie.”

“What are you doing?”

“I said step away.”

Mark stood slowly.

“This isn’t what you think.”

Hannah crossed the bathroom and pulled Sophie into her arms.

Her daughter was trembling.

There were red patches along Sophie’s forearms.

Not severe wounds.

But enough.

Hannah looked at Mark.

“What is in that bottle?”

He glanced toward the hallway.

“Hannah, listen to me.”

Sirens sounded outside.

Mark went completely still.

“You called the police?”

“Yes.”

His expression became something Hannah had not expected.

Not anger.

Terror.

“You shouldn’t have done that.”

Hannah held Sophie tighter.

“Why?”

Mark looked at the brown bottle.

Then at the kitchen timer.

And whispered:

“Because Keller is going to know.”

Hannah stared at him.

“Who is Keller?”

Before Mark could answer, heavy footsteps thundered up the staircase.

Police entered the hallway.

And Mark’s eyes went not to Sophie—

May you like

but to a tiny black notebook hidden beneath the folded towels.

👉 Mark seemed more frightened that someone named Keller would discover the police had arrived than he was about being caught—raising one terrifying question: who had told him to conduct the secret bathroom sessions?
