Chapter 3 - THE SILVER LID OPENS

The doorbell rang again.
Dominic did not move toward it.
Neither did Victoria.
Natalie’s face had gone pale beneath her makeup.
I walked to the entryway and opened the door.
Grace Holloway stood on my porch in a charcoal suit, silver hair pulled back, one hand holding a leather folder.
Beside her stood Detective Carla Reyes and two uniformed officers.
Behind them was Mia Ellison.
Dominic’s first wife.
She looked older than the wedding photograph Dominic had once shown me, but not broken.
Her hair was short.
Her posture steady.
In her hands, she held a small cardboard box.
Dominic saw her from the dining room.
His face changed.
Not anger first.
Fear.
“Mia,” he said.
She looked at him.
“Hello, Dominic.”
Victoria stood so fast her chair scraped the floor.
“That woman is not allowed in this house.”
I looked at Victoria.
“This house is mine. I decide who enters.”
Grace stepped inside.
“Detective Reyes has already received the initial evidence package. The officers are here for a domestic violence report and to preserve additional evidence related to financial fraud.”
Dominic laughed once.
“You’ve lost your mind.”
Detective Reyes looked at my face.
Then at Dominic’s hand.
Then at the dining table.
“Mr. Vale, did you strike your wife tonight?”
“No.”
I picked up my phone and tapped the screen.
The dining room wall display lit up.
Dominic’s voice filled the room.
“Dinner should have been ready twenty minutes ago.”
Then the slap.
The sound was worse on recording.
Clean.
Sharp.
Undeniable.
Victoria closed her eyes.
Natalie whispered, “Oh God.”
Dominic stared at the screen.
“I want a lawyer.”
Grace smiled.
“Excellent instinct. Late, but excellent.”
Detective Reyes nodded to the officers.
“Mr. Vale, step away from Mrs. Bennett.”
Dominic’s head snapped toward me.
“You used your maiden name?”
“I never stopped.”
Grace placed the folder on the dining table and opened it.
“Dominic, you are being served with an emergency protective order, notice of divorce filing, notice of exclusive occupancy claim, preservation demand, and civil claims related to unauthorized access of business accounts.”
Victoria pointed at Grace.
“You can’t throw him out. This is marital property.”
“No,” Grace said. “It is separate property owned by Audrey Bennett through the Bennett Family Trust before marriage. Dominic has no title interest.”
Victoria looked at me with naked hatred.
“You selfish little—”
Mia set her cardboard box on the table.
Victoria stopped speaking.
Mia opened it.
Inside were old photographs, police reports, a restraining order petition, and bank statements.
Grace turned to Detective Reyes.
“Ms. Ellison has agreed to provide evidence of pattern conduct involving Dominic Vale and Victoria Vale, including coercive control, false mental health claims, and unauthorized financial transfers from her former marital accounts.”
Dominic took one step toward Mia.
One officer moved with him.
He stopped.
“Mia was unstable,” Victoria snapped. “Everyone knew that.”
Mia looked at her.
“You said that after every bruise.”
The room went silent.
Mia picked up one photograph.
Her left eye blackened.
Her lip split.
The same expression I had seen in my mirror that morning.
Dominic looked away.
That hurt him more than guilt.
Not the harm.
The comparison.
I turned back to the dining table and lifted the documents one by one.
“Victoria,” I said, placing her shell company records before her, “V.M. Lifestyle Solutions received $186,000 from my business through forged invoices.”
She said nothing.
“Natalie,” I continued, placing the credit card statements down, “you charged $47,300 to my company card for trips you claimed were client entertainment.”
Natalie’s lips trembled.
“I thought Dominic cleared it.”
“Of course you did.”
Then I placed the hotel photos in front of Dominic.
“And Dominic, you promised Bianca half of my company once you convinced a court I was unstable enough to need marital financial supervision.”
His face hardened.
“That’s not true.”
Grace tapped the folder.
“Bianca Moore gave a sworn statement this afternoon.”
May you like
Dominic’s eyes widened.
For the first time, he understood the meal had been prepared long before he sat down hungry.
