Chapter 14 - Catherine Hale

Catherine Hale was forty-two.

Not twenty-one.

The later birth record belonged to a different woman with the same name.

The Catherine Thomas Carter knew was Robert Hale’s daughter from a relationship before Diane.

Robert supported her privately.

Diane knew.

Marcus did not.

At least not as a child.

Catherine became an estate accountant.

Thomas Carter hired her quietly after discovering the fraudulent transfer of young Catherine Hale’s settlement—Marcus’s deceased sister shared the same first name by coincidence or perhaps by Robert’s choice.

To avoid confusion, the family called Robert’s older daughter Cate.

Cate helped Thomas trace where the settlement money went.

She discovered Henry Marsh’s role.

Later Hearthwell.

She became independent successor protector for the Wells trust because Thomas trusted her to oppose both families if necessary.

Then she vanished from public records twelve years earlier.

Not kidnapped.

Entered federal witness protection after testifying in a financial-fraud case unrelated publicly to the Hales.

Victor had spent years trying to locate her.

Why now?

Because if Evelyn Sloan was disqualified and Cate stepped in, Hearthwell could never gain temporary control of the Wells property.

Victor needed Cate neutralized legally.

Or persuaded.

Margaret said he found her through an old pension record.

Current identity unknown to Margaret.

But Victor had a phone number.

Ryan traced it.

Maine.

Federal contacts intervened.

Cate was alive.

Safe.

And furious that Victor found her number.

She agreed to speak with Natalie by secure video.

Natalie saw Robert immediately in her face.

Same eyes as Marcus.

Same jaw.

But none of Marcus’s coldness.

“My father talked about Thomas Carter all the time,” Cate said.

“Good or bad?”

“Usually both.”

Natalie almost smiled.

“Did you know about me?”

“Yes.”

“All my life?”

“Since you were born.”

“Why?”

“Thomas wanted someone outside the Carter family who understood what Henry had done.”

“And you never contacted me.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because there was no reason until Hearthwell touched your assets.”

“They did eighteen months ago.”

“I learned six months ago.”

“Then?”

“I started collecting evidence.”

Cate had already been communicating with federal financial investigators.

Hearthwell’s broader case was bigger than Ryan knew.

Temporary guardianship abuses.

Fraudulent fiduciary fees.

Conflicted asset sales.

Not every client a victim.

Enough to establish pattern.

“Did you know Marcus locked me downstairs?”

“No.”

Cate’s voice cracked.

“If I had…”

Natalie did not need promises about what someone would have done.

“What matters is now.”

Cate nodded.

She had evidence Victor was not running alone.

Not because of some mysterious larger mastermind.

Because Hearthwell had a board.

Three directors.

Victor.

Henry Marsh.

And a silent investment partner:

Greyson Capital Fiduciary Ventures.

Natalie froze.

The buyer.

Greyson Capital itself had suspended the property acquisition and claimed ignorance.

Its acquisitions director at dinner might have been innocent.

But a different Greyson subsidiary had invested in Hearthwell.

Conflict.

Potential financial motive.

Ryan investigated.

Greyson’s senior leadership said the fiduciary investment was passive.

Board documents contradicted them partly.

One executive received quarterly reports about “distressed family asset opportunities.”

Name:

Jonathan Vale.

Greyson managing partner.

He had never attended the dinner.

But Victor communicated with him.

Messages:

Carter property becomes available if maternal authority shifts.

Jonathan:

No physical exposure. We walk if family conflict goes public.

Victor:

Understood.

Jonathan did not authorize confinement.

He knew a family control dispute might create an acquisition opportunity.

Morally ugly.

Potentially legally problematic.

But not proof he knew criminal coercion.

Then a later message, after Natalie had already been locked downstairs:

Victor:

Timing issue. Wife refusing.

Jonathan:

Do not involve us in domestic leverage. Suspend.

That mattered.

Greyson had attempted to step back.

Victor continued anyway.

The conspiracy narrowed again.

Victor.

Diane.

Marcus.

Henry.

Margaret.

Keene.

Evelyn through complicity.

Not every corporation needed to be evil.

Cate’s evidence made prosecution stronger.

Then she said:

“There’s something about Eli.”

Natalie stiffened.

“What?”

“Thomas’s Wells trust has a protector verification code.”

“Meaning?”

“After the descendant child is born, the independent protector receives a sealed notice.”

“You got one?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“This morning.”

“What does it say?”

Cate looked unsettled.

“It lists Eli’s birth time correctly.”

“So?”

“And a second child.”

Natalie stopped breathing.

“What second child?”

The notice had been generated automatically from an old Carter estate system.

Beneficiary transition:

ELI THOMAS HALE — PRIMARY DESCENDANT.

Then:

CONTINGENT DESCENDANT RECORD PENDING — FEMALE CHILD / PRIOR REGISTRATION.

Natalie stared.

“I have never had another child.”

Cate believed her.

The system may contain an old administrative placeholder.

Or fraud.

But someone had inserted a prior female descendant into the Wells trust database.

When?

Eight months before Natalie married Marcus.

That meant Marcus did not create it.

Diane may not have.

Thomas Carter was already dead by then.

Who had access?

Henry Marsh.

Evelyn Sloan.

Cate.

And one Carter estate administrator.

Natalie’s mother Elaine.

Elaine denied creating it.

Maya traced system logs.

User:

H.MARSH.

Henry.

He had inserted a phantom prior descendant years before Natalie’s marriage.

Why?

Henry looked genuinely shocked when confronted.

“I did not.”

His credentials had been used.

Again.

Who had access to his office?

Victor worked there at the time.

Victor could have created a hidden competing beneficiary years before any current plan.

A long-term lever.

Then Ryan’s team received a new development.

Victor Sloan had been located.

Not fleeing.

He had entered a law office in Washington and asked to surrender to federal investigators.

His condition:

Protection from Catherine Hale.

Cate stared at the screen when Ryan told her.

“From me?”

Victor’s recorded statement:

“Catherine isn’t protecting Natalie.”

“What is she doing?” Ryan asked.

Victor leaned forward.

“She is protecting the other child.”

Natalie felt cold.

“What other child?”

Victor smiled for the first time since his disappearance.

May you like

“The girl Henry’s system says existed before Eli.”

👉 Victor finally surrendered, but instead of denying the trust manipulation, he claimed the mysterious “prior descendant” was real—and that Cate had spent years protecting her identity.
