The placement hearing happened three weeks later.
Tyler did not sleep the night before.
He sat in the guest room at the temporary foster house and stared at the ceiling.
The foster family was kind.
That almost made it harder.
Kindness felt temporary when you had not signed for it.
At court, Dana presented her report.
Jaxon had passed every background check required.
His home inspection was approved.
The twins’ therapist wrote that Tyler’s bond with Seth and Luke was strong but should not be exploited.
Boone submitted a medical support plan.
Mara submitted school transport options.
The Iron Saints submitted nothing as a club.
That was Jaxon’s choice.
“This is not about a patch,” he said.
“It is about a kid.”
Roy’s attorney argued that placing Tyler with a biker was inappropriate.
The judge asked for specific concerns.
The attorney listed reputation.
Motorcycles.
Club history.
The judge looked unimpressed.
“Reputation did not carry two children through a blizzard.”
Tyler looked down so no one would see his eyes fill.
Then the judge asked Tyler if he wanted to speak.
Tyler stood.
His hands shook.
Jaxon did not move.
That helped.
“I know people think they look scary,” Tyler said.
A few people glanced toward Jaxon and Boone.
“But scary is not always unsafe.”
He swallowed.
“Roy looked normal.”
“He had a job.”
“He waved at neighbors.”
“He knew how to smile when teachers asked questions.”
Tyler looked at the judge.
“Jaxon scares people who hurt kids.”
“I’m okay with that.”
Boone wiped his face and pretended it was his beard.
Dana smiled.
The judge granted temporary placement with Jaxon Reed, pending continued review.
Tyler sat down too fast.
Like his knees forgot their job.
Jaxon did not cheer.
He only reached across the space between them and placed one hand flat on the table.
Not grabbing.
Offering.
Tyler stared at it.
Then put his hand over Jaxon’s.
For a second, he was fifteen and five at the same time.
A boy who had saved children.
A child who had needed saving.
Outside the courtroom, Seth and Luke waited with Mara.
When they heard, they screamed.
“Tyler’s coming home!”
