Chapter 1

Seventy Three Year Old Bride Marries Her Dying First Love Before He Leaves A Mysterious Box And Calls Their Wedding His Final Trap.
Thomas held Nancy’s ringed hand beneath the soft daylight of the private hospital room and laughed like a young man who had stolen one last impossible hour from time.
The oxygen cannula rested beneath his nose.
His black tuxedo hung slightly loose over his fragile frame.
A hospital wristband circled the same hand that now wore a wedding ring.
Nancy sat beside him in her white lace gown and veil, pearl earrings trembling as she cried and smiled at once.
Her bouquet of white roses rested against the blanket.
Thomas lifted their joined hands toward the camera while the nurse stood near the medical equipment, wiping quietly at her eyes.
“You finally came back to me, Nancy.”
Nancy’s smile shook.
She lowered their hands and cupped his cheek with the same tenderness she had carried for a lifetime.
Then she pressed her forehead gently against his, careful not to disturb the oxygen tubing.
“And I’m never leaving you again.”
Thomas closed his eyes.
For one breath, the monitor, the hospital bed, the tubes, and the years between them seemed to disappear.
Then his eyes opened.
He looked past Nancy.
Attorney Nathan Cole stood near the door in a dark charcoal suit, holding a small locked wooden box against his chest.
Thomas reached out with sudden urgency and gripped Nathan’s wrist.
“After I’m gone, give her the box—and use my exact words.”
Nancy turned.
Her happiness shifted into confusion.
Nathan gave a solemn nod.
Nancy tightened one hand around her bouquet.
“What exact words?”
The room became still except for the soft monitor and Thomas’s careful breathing.
Thomas looked directly into Nancy’s eyes.
A faint, mischievous smile appeared on his exhausted face.
“Tell her she walked straight into my trap.”
Nancy stared at him.
Nathan held the unopened box.
The nurse looked from one to the other, frozen between tears and a smile.

And Thomas, dying but radiant, looked more alive than anyone in the room.
