Chapter 4 - THE FRIEND WHO ARRIVED TOO LATE

Captain Elena Ross arrived at the hospital forty-seven minutes after the drive opened.

Too late for someone worried about a friend.

Too fast for someone not tracking the alert.

She entered in uniform, hair perfect despite the rain, face full of controlled concern.

“Ava,” she said, moving toward the bed. “Thank God.”

Malik stepped between them.

Elena stopped.

Her eyes moved from Malik to Pierce to Ethan.

Then to the evidence bag holding the compass.

One second.

Too long.

Ava saw it.

So did Malik.

Elena’s face softened.

“What is happening?”

Ava’s voice was weak but steady.

“You tell me.”

Elena looked hurt.

“I received your Safe Harbor alert. I came as soon as I could.”

Pierce said, “Did you?”

Elena turned to him.

“Admiral?”

Malik held up his phone.

“Your base access log shows you entered Pier 6 at 2104 and left at 2137. Ava’s alert went out at 2122. Why did you go to Pier 6 before coming here?”

Elena blinked.

“Classified courier issue.”

Grace stepped in.

“Interesting. The courier lockbox at Pier 6 was accessed with your credentials eleven minutes after Ava’s SOS. The box contained archive copies of Operation Night Compass routing records.”

Elena’s face remained calm.

But her hand moved slightly toward her phone.

Malik noticed.

“Don’t.”

Elena laughed softly.

“Am I being accused of something in a hospital room?”

Ava looked at the woman who had brought her coffee after funerals, sat beside her at promotion ceremonies, remembered her mother’s birthday, and taught her how to breathe through panic.

“I want to hear you say Caleb’s name.”

Elena’s smile faltered.

“What?”

“My brother. Say his name.”

Elena’s eyes cooled.

“Ava, you’re injured. This is shock.”

“Say his name.”

Silence.

Then Elena said, “Caleb was unstable.”

The room changed.

Not because the words were loud.

Because they were prepared.

Pierce lifted his head.

“That was the phrase used in the false resignation memo.”

Elena looked at him.

“You would know. You signed it.”

“I signed it to keep him alive.”

“No,” Elena said. “You signed it because you needed a ghost.”

Ethan stepped forward, hands still cuffed.

“You sent two men to Ava’s apartment.”

Elena looked at him with open contempt.

“I wondered when you’d finally choose a side.”

“I chose one six months ago.”

“You chose guilt.”

“I chose the woman you were using.”

Ava’s eyes moved to Ethan.

Six months ago, he had disappeared from her life after an argument about Pierce.

She thought he had abandoned her.

Now she understood he had gone undercover.

Elena turned toward Ava.

“You want the truth? Fine. Pierce buried your brother. Pierce lied to you. Pierce used you tonight.”

“Yes,” Ava said. “He did.”

Pierce flinched.

Ava kept looking at Elena.

“But you came here to see if the bait worked.”

Elena’s face hardened.

That was the first real expression she had shown.

Malik’s phone buzzed.

He looked down.

Then at Elena.

“They found your courier bag at Pier 6. Burn sleeve, encrypted token, and a second yellow envelope addressed to me.”

Elena smiled faintly.

“Then I suppose you should arrest me.”

Malik nodded.

“I was hoping you’d say that.”

Two agents moved in.

Elena did not fight.

She only looked at Ava.

“You think Pierce saved you? Ask him why your father’s compass was in the chapel. Ask him who put it there after the funeral. Ask him why Caleb had to run instead of testify.”

Ava turned to Pierce.

The questions landed.

Pierce did not defend himself.

That hurt worse.

Elena laughed as agents cuffed her.

“See? The truth still cuts him too.”

As Malik took her out, Ava closed her eyes.

Safe Harbor had worked.

May you like

But it had not saved her from betrayal.

It had only recorded it.
