It was addressed to her.
Daniel had placed it inside the suitcase months before his death, knowing Natalie used the same luggage for every conference.
The letter began with an apology.
I have treated secrecy like courage because I was afraid you would stop me.
Daniel explained that he discovered Red Oak was built on stolen family trusts and false guardianships. Linda had helped move children between relatives to preserve company voting rights.
Sophie was not the first.
Daniel’s father, Robert Foster, had another son before marrying Linda.
That child was Thomas.
Linda raised Daniel as her own while Robert secretly supported Thomas elsewhere.
Thomas grew up believing Daniel stole his family, name, and inheritance.
Red Oak recruited him through resentment.
Daniel understood too late that Thomas did not want only money.
He wanted the Foster family to collapse publicly.
The Thanksgiving plan was designed to destroy Linda, Rachel, Grant, Natalie, and Daniel’s legacy at once.
Thomas arranged the conference.
Rebecca monitored the shed.

Grant controlled the petitions.
Linda believed she was gaining custody.
Rachel believed she was gaining money.
Each person thought they were using the others.
Thomas intended to release everything after the children were removed.
Daniel’s letter contained a final instruction.
The trust does not belong to Eli or Sophie alone. It belongs to every child whose identity Red Oak used. Do not inherit the system. Dissolve it carefully.
Natalie understood why Red Oak needed her declared unstable.
She was the only trustee authorized to dismantle the structure without transferring control to another family member.
The letter also named a witness.

Daniel’s biological mother knew where the original child registry was stored.
Melissa admitted it after reading the letter.
The registry was beneath Foster Family Holdings headquarters inside an old records vault.
Linda believed it contained only trust documents.
In reality, it held birth records, guardianship transfers, DNA reports, and private settlements for dozens of children.
Dana obtained a warrant.
The vault required three keys.
A Foster executive biometric.
A biological descendant’s DNA confirmation.
A medical witness signature.
Natalie qualified through marriage and trustee authority.
Sophie or Eli qualified as descendants.
Melissa qualified as medical witness.
No child would be taken to the vault.
Sophie’s verified DNA file provided the second key.
The door opened.
Inside were rows of sealed folders.
Some children had grown into adults without knowing their real identities.
Others had been placed with safe families and should not be publicly exposed.
Daniel’s letter was right.
A reckless release would create new harm.
Natalie instructed Dana to transfer the records to an independent judicial panel and child-advocacy team.
No Foster relative would control them.
Then the vault’s central screen activated.
Thomas appeared live from police custody.
He had left a timed message.
“You still think this began with Linda.”

Melissa had given birth to him.

Natalie stared.
Daniel’s recent DNA test confirmed Eli as his son.
The older registry test did not.
Someone had replaced one of the samples.
The original test had been conducted by Melissa.
She looked at Natalie in horror.
“I never changed it.”
The registry identified the person who authorized the replacement.
Rachel Foster.
Rachel had altered Eli’s paternity file when he was an infant.
