Chapter 9 - WHAT IMOGEN WANTED TO KEEP

The foundation produced Imogen’s board communications.
Not because police magically seized everything.
Because the board owned its records.
One document mattered.
Drafted by Imogen.
Family Advisory Continuity Proposal.
She proposed that if Adrian’s branch remained inactive at forty:
Imogen would become sole family adviser for a ten-year term.
She would receive:
Administrative stipend.
Travel reimbursement.
Authority to set the agenda for family-origin grant requests.
Right to nominate the next adult family adviser from her branch when she stepped down, subject to board approval.
Not guaranteed Felix.
But clearly aimed toward her line.
The independent board had never approved the proposal.
Alice Monroe had written:
This exceeds Beatrice’s intent.
Imogen responded:
Someone needs continuity.
Then:
Adrian has never cared about this work.
True.
Then:
His sudden attempt to activate a branch through adoption should not dilute the family’s existing structure.
There.
“Sudden attempt.”
Adrian and Sawyer had been working toward adoption for nearly a year.
But to Imogen, Sawyer joining legally was a governance event.
Then another email.
Two months before:
IMOGEN:
If the adoption is delayed past the July review, the dormant seat converts automatically, correct?
FOUNDATION:
Correct under current language, unless the board grants temporary preservation for extraordinary circumstances.
IMOGEN:
What qualifies?
FOUNDATION:
Not hypothetical.
There.
She knew the deadline.
Then three weeks later:
Imogen searched online for:
step parent adoption change of residence final hearing.
stepchild leaves home before adoption finalized.
challenging home study stability.
No crime in search.
Combined with later conduct?
Relevant.
Then police recovered one deleted note from her device.
Need Sawyer out of room before home check.
My skin went cold.
No direct:
hit Sawyer.
No:
harm him.
But the goal of removing him from his space was written.
Another line:
Adrian will cave if Rosalind thinks he changed his mind.
That explained the fake messages.
Another:
Felix in room makes transition visible.
The Cousin was a prop too.
Not collaborator.
Then:
After July, branch question is over.
There.
The central secret was one step away from formal confirmation.
Still, Imogen’s lawyer argued:
The notes reflected legal strategy about a family foundation, not intent to harm Sawyer.
She believed Adrian’s marriage unstable.
She believed adoption should be delayed.
She believed Felix’s presence was temporary.
The slap happened in anger unrelated to foundation.
Some of that might be true.
Then the family board requested Imogen testify at the branch review.
She could refuse.
No criminal penalty.
But refusal could affect governance fitness.
Her lawyer negotiated limited testimony with no waiver of criminal rights.
Good.
Adrian was asked too.
He had his own problem.
He admitted:
“I ignored the foundation for years.”
“Why?”
“Because I hated family governance.”
“Did that leave Imogen doing almost all family-advisory work?”
“Yes.”
“Did you suddenly care after Sawyer’s adoption?”
“I care now because my sister used it against my child.”
“Would you have activated your advisory line if no conflict happened?”
Adrian paused.
“Probably because the adoption did it automatically. But I don’t know if I would have served.”
Honest.
Then:
“Do you want the seat?”
Long pause.
“I don’t know anymore.”
That mattered.
If Adrian gave up the seat, Imogen’s entire sabotage might become pointless.
But could he?
The instrument allowed him to waive personal service.
It did not automatically allow the dormant family line to disappear while preserving Sawyer’s beneficiary eligibility.
Board could modify under court supervision.
Complex.
Possible.
Then Alice asked me:
“Would you want Sawyer’s adoption to activate a family power position?”
“No.”
The answer came immediately.
“Why?”
“Because he is five.”
“His legal status would only activate adult branch rights.”
“I understand. I still hate that his adoption changes anyone’s authority.”
There.
Maybe the real solution.
Not make Sawyer choose family money.
Remove the connection.
The board agreed to study reform.
Then Imogen entered for testimony.
Her first question:
“Did you send yourself messages from Adrian’s account?”
Her lawyer objected under criminal exposure.
She did not answer.
Second:
“Did you plan to use Sawyer’s change of residence to delay adoption beyond July?”
She hesitated.
Then:
“I believed the adoption should not be finalized while the household was unstable.”
“Did you create that instability?”
Another pause.
“I packed a room.”
“Did Adrian authorize you?”
“I believed he would.”
“Based on messages you cannot currently authenticate?”
Silence.
Then:
“Did you want his family-advisory line to expire?”
Her face changed.
Finally.
“I wanted the foundation protected from a rushed legal maneuver.”
Not yes.
Not no.
Then Alice produced Imogen’s own deleted note.
After July, branch question is over.
Imogen looked at it.
May you like
And said nothing.
The next morning the board would issue findings.
