Chapter 9 - the petition Adam never filed

Adam’s draft petition changed everything.
It was dated three days before his death.
Prepared by a family-law attorney named Julia Mercer.
Sarah had never heard of her.
Julia remembered Adam clearly.
“He was scared.”
“Of Amber?” Detective Miller asked.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“He believed she was drugging him.”
Sarah stopped breathing.
Adam had known.
Not everything.
Enough.
“He said he kept waking up confused after drinks she prepared.”
“Did he have toxicology?”
“No.”
“He had no proof?”
“He had photographs.”
“What photographs?”
“Pills in her purse. Empty vials. Screenshots of messages with someone named Helen.”
Sarah stared.
“Where are those?”
Julia looked troubled.
“He took them with him.”
They were not in Adam’s belongings after death.
Someone removed them.
Probably during the cleanup Connor described.
Julia continued.
“Adam wanted temporary custody until Amber underwent evaluation.”
“Did he intend divorce?”
“Yes.”
“Did Amber know?”
“I don’t know.”
Connor did.
He admitted Adam told him during their confrontation.
Amber likely learned immediately.
Timeline:
Adam prepares custody petition.
Connor and Amber know.
Three days later, Adam dies after being drugged and injected.
Then Melissa alters toxicology.
Pike stays silent.
Helen hides.
Martin certifies Amber as stable surviving parent.
Sarah becomes co-trustee but not guardian.
The children remain with Amber.
The system closes around the lie.
Then eleven months later Caleb remembers the stairs.
Maybe more.
Amber’s fear increases.
She begins documenting behavior.
Plans residential placement.
Builds a false case against Sarah.
Finally, the park.
Aaron asked Caleb another gentle question through the child interviewer.
“Did you tell Mom anything about Dad recently?”
Caleb nodded.
“What?”
“That I remember the stairs.”
“When?”
“Last week.”
Sarah closed her eyes.
There.
The timing.
“What did Mom say?”
“That dreams can feel real.”
“Was it a dream?”
“No.”
“What else did you remember?”
Caleb looked toward Lily.
“Dad had a red phone.”
Sarah frowned.
“What red phone?”
Caleb drew one.
Adam had used a small red work phone separate from his personal cell.
Sarah remembered it.
He used it for engineering clients.
Police never recovered it after his death.
“What did Dad do with it?” the interviewer asked.
Caleb whispered:
“He gave it to Lily.”
Everyone turned.
Lily went pale.
Sarah looked at her.
“Lily?”
The girl began crying.
“I forgot.”
“What do you mean?”
“The night before Dad died, he came into my room.”
“Then?”
“He gave me a phone.”
“Where is it?”
Lily shook her head.
“He told me to hide it where Mom never looks.”
“Where?”
Lily’s eyes widened as memory returned.
“My dollhouse.”
The Reed home remained under warrant.
Police searched Lily’s old wooden dollhouse in the attic.
Behind a false cardboard wall was a red smartphone.
Battery dead.
Storage intact.
Adam had hidden his evidence with his daughter.
Not because he expected her to understand.
Because Amber ignored Lily’s toys.
Digital forensics opened it.
Messages with Julia.
Photos of pills.
Videos of Amber screaming.
Bank transfers to Connor.
And one recording from the basement fall.
Adam had started recording before the argument.
Amber:
“You’re not taking my children.”
Adam:
“I’m protecting them.”
Amber:
“From me?”
Adam:
“From whatever you’re becoming.”
Then a shove.
Impact.
Caleb crying in the distance.
The recording continued.
Amber whispered:
“You should have stayed out of my accounts.”
Adam:
“You stole from the kids.”
Sarah stared.
The financial theft predated his death.
Then another video.
Two days later.
Adam sitting in his car.
“If Amber finds out I copied the Greenfield documents, she’ll know I spoke to Martin.”
Martin Hale.
The evaluator who later certified Amber stable.
Adam already knew him.
Why?
The next clip answered.
Martin and Adam meeting secretly.
Martin said:
“I can document what you’ve shown me, but you need to get the children somewhere safe first.”
Adam:
“I’m moving them to Sarah’s tomorrow.”
Sarah covered her mouth.
He had planned to bring Lily and Caleb to her.
He died that night.
Then Martin said something that made Detective Miller freeze.
“Do not tell Sarah why yet. Amber has someone watching her.”
Sarah stared.
“Watching me?”
The video ended.
Who?
Why?
Aaron checked Sarah’s old building security records.
Eleven months earlier, the night Adam died, a car had parked outside Sarah’s apartment for three hours.
Registered to:
Dr. Martin Hale.
Sarah felt cold.
